More on Oversight and Government Reform

Mar 23, 2009 Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Michael Honda (D-CA) have reintroduced the “Fixing the Federal Voting Assistance Program Act” (H.R. 1659) which would strengthen oversight of the Federal office charged with helping overseas military and civilian voters.

WASHINGTON, DC – In a time when the federal deficit is skyrocketing, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) has introduced a bill which could help increase payments to the government from energy leases under Federal onshore and offshore lands by ensuring an accurate accounting of the resources extracted from those lands.

Mar 3, 2009 Press Release

WASHINGTON – Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Charles Gonzalez (D-TX), Charlie Dent (R-PA), and Jim Gerlach (R-PA) have introduced HR 1254, “The Restoring the Integrity of American Statistics Act.” The bill would remove the Census Bureau from the Commerce Department and make it a separate, independent agency similar to NASA or the National Archives.

“The Census Bureau’s work is scientific: it requires careful, thoughtful planning by those who know how best to perform this huge undertaking. The work is too important to be a stepchild of a larger organization—buffeted by year-to-year budget whims and political storms that every Cabinet agency is subject to,” Maloney said. “Elevating the Census Bureau to the status of an independent body will allow it to conduct its ten-year planning, testing and execution process without interference.”

WASHINGTON—Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued this statement in response to Sen. Judd Gregg’s withdrawal as President Obama’s nominee as Commerce Secretary:

"President Obama must be commended for continuing to try to reach across party lines. Regretfully, his choice as Commerce Secretary didn't work out. I'm certain that President Obama will name another Commerce nominee and a Census Director shortly, and that planning and preparation will proceed on a full and fair count that must begin in just 11 months.”

WASHINGTON—Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued this statement in response to House Republicans’ census press event this morning:

"House Republicans borrowed a page from Seinfeld today: they made a show about nothing. Even though the White House issued a statement saying that they were NOT proposing removing the Census from the Department of Commerce or directing the Census from the White House, today House Republicans had a press event to decry what ISN’T happening. And when questioned with that fact during the event, the Republicans effectively said ‘So what? We still want to investigate it.’ ”

Dec 3, 2008 Press Release
WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, today announced they have sent a letter to Department of Defense Secretary Robert Gates urging him to conduct a fair and open hiring process for the next Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) Director.  This position is charged with administering the absentee voting system for all military and overseas voters. Citing serious concerns about the manner in which the selection process has been handled to date, Sen. Cornyn and Rep. Maloney, along with Sen. David Vitter, R-LA, and Congressman Mike Honda, D-CA, are seeking to ensure all candidates are fully considered. The incoming FVAP Director is an individual who can offer fresh approaches and solutions for improving the department, specifically the military voting system.
