Education has changed drastically over the years.

Through various regulations and requirements, we've allowed our education system to become stagnant. Far from being the gateway to success it once was, much of today's higher education system treats students as commodities to be processed through an assembly line.

While they were once faced with limitless possibilities, today's graduates receive a crushing burden of debt with their diploma that meets or exceeds the cost of a mortgage in many cities.

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, the House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 3136, the Advancing Competency-Based Education Demonstration Project Act, sponsored by Representatives Matt Salmon (AZ-05) and Jared Polis (CO-02), by a vote of 414-0. The bill would increase access and affordability in higher education by allowing institutions the flexibility to provide a degree that is based on a student’s knowledge and skills instead of seat time.

Hastings (FL-20) introduced the Transparency in Education Act (TIE Act).  With 18 original cosponsors, the bipartisan bill requires the U.S. Department of Education to respond to repeated calls for real transparency and accountability in its attempts to promulgate the proposed 841-page gainful employment regulation.  As currently drafted, the proposed regulation would curtail higher education opportunities for millions of students attending schools in every state.

A movement is starting around the country to do just that. Programs that have adopted “competency-based” education allow students to work at their own pace and progress by mastering the knowledge and skills required for a particular course, regardless of how long it takes.
