Beatty Supports Measure to Raise Debt Ceiling and End Government Shutdown

(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement regarding her support for the Senate Amendment to H.R. 2775, which will increase the debt ceiling and re-open the federal government.  The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 285 - 144.

Today, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-3) voted in favor of the Senate Amendment to H.R. 2775, which is the bipartisan Senate compromise to reopen the government after a fifteen-day shutdown and ensure that our nation’s bills are paid on time.

The amendment contains a Continuing Resolution (CR) at the sequester level of funding until January 15, 2014. Passage of this CR will mean many great things for our country--that 800,000 furloughed federal Americans will get back to work, government payments will be made on time, additional funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs is available to provide overtime pay to reduce the benefits backlog, and our national parks and monuments will be open for every American to enjoy, to name a few.

“I am very pleased that our nation’s full faith and credit remains intact and to see that our federal government is reopening after a 15-day shutdown, allowing millions of Americans to return to work and to serve our great nation.”

“However, the government shutdown and debt ceiling crisis easily could have been averted if certain Republican Members of the House had not continuously opposed rational solutions.”

“I look forward to Congress working together in the next few months to provide our nation with a long-term, bipartisan budget that addresses our country’s most pressing needs.”
