WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman and former U.S. Navy Psychiatrist Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), Former Chief of Staff of the Army General George W. Casey (Ret) and author/journalist/filmmaker Sebastian Junger will host a special screening of Korengal this evening (11/13) at the U.S. Capitol.

Along with contributing veteran service organizations TAPS and Team Rubicon, the screening and panel discussion kick off a crucial conversation in Congress about the transition of American warriors to civilian life.

“High rates of suicide, unemployment, homelessness, alcoholism, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress are decimating our community of veterans,” said Congressman McDermott. “Today, we are seeing too many casualties among American soldiers in their transition home.  In light of this crisis, Congress must act.”

More Information on Korengal

Korengal is a follow-up from Junger’s 2010 Oscar-nominated film Restrepo.  Shot from the same footage that he and the late British photojournalist Tim Hetherington shot during their time at OP Restrepo in Afghanistan in 2007-2008, Korengal captures what war feels like for soldiers.  The film explores why soldiers might even miss war, and more importantly, why it is hard to come home. Korengal also emphasizes the importance of community in a servicemember’s transition from wartime to peace.  We as a nation have a responsibility to embrace our warriors, to listen to their stories, and to help them as good soldiers become good citizens.
