I enjoy my active involvement with numerous organizations and participation in events and projects throughout the different communities I represent in the 9th Congressional District.
 

Naturalization Ceremony

On November 24, 2014, Congresman Levin was honored to participate in the Naturalization Ceremony of 41 new U.S. citizens at Macomb Intermediate School District. 

Michigan Consumers for Healthcare Award Ceremony 

On September 29, 2014, Congressman Levin was honored to receive an award from Michigan Consumers for Healthcarethis morning and joined in thanking local health navigators from around the state including those from Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit and the Chaldean Community Foundation.

M-1 Rail Celebration

On September 15, 2014 Congressman Levin joined other elected officals in celebrating the M-1 Rail project along the Woodward Avenue corridor. The federal government has been and must continue to be a full partner in this effort. You can read more about the project by clicking here.

National Strategy to End Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities

On August 28, 2014 Congressman Levin addressed the National Strategy to End Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities Commission summit held in Detroit. The summit is a multi-state fact-finding mission to develop a national strategy for reducing the yearly, 1,500+ child deaths that result from abuse and neglect.

Arsenal Appreciation Day

On August 21, 2014, Congressman Levin joined Major General Gwen Bingham to kick off Arsenal Appreciation Day at the Warren Birthday Bash. 

Unveiling of New Patrol Vessel 

On August 19, 2014, Congressman Levin joined Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and the Macomb Sheriff’s Marine Division to unveil a new patrol vessel that was purchased with funds from a federal Port Security Grant that I supported. This program is a vivid example of how the federal government can effectively partner with local law enforcement to keep our community, waterways and borders safe.

Visit to Local Communities

From August 15 - 18, 2014, Congressman Levin visited local communities throughout the district to see the damages caused by the August flood. As everyone continues to work through their individual damage recovery he reminded residents of the importantance that their record keeping plays into the local damage assessments that are being processed through the counties and to the State. 

North Lake High School Graduation

On June 6, 2014, Congressman Levin served as the commencement speaker for the North Lake High School graduation ceremony. The students of the class of 2014 and all of their families should be so very proud of their accomplishment. Hats off to Lake Shore Public Schools, Lakeview Public Schools and South Lake Schools for a truly collaborative and effective community partnership.

Madison Height's UPS Circle of Honor

On June 3, 2014, Congressman Levin visited the Madison Heights UPS facility to honor the 28 drivers who were inducted into this year's Circle of Honor for driving for 25 years without a single incident. Congratulations!

2nd Annual Bike Path Event

On June 2, 2014, Congressman Levin participated as an Honorary Ride Leader for CARE of Southeastern Michigan’s 2nd Annual Bike Path event. CARE is an outstanding organization that helps individuals and families with a wide range of support services including substance abuse and student programs.

Michigan’s 9th District Congressional Art Competition

On May 7, 2014, Congressman Levin congratulated Warren Mott High School 12th grader Paige Goodgine for being named this year’s winner of Michigan’s 9th District Congressional Art Competition. Her colored pencil drawing is titled “Crimson Skull” will be displayed in Washington D.C. in the Capitol complex for 1 year starting this spring.

Academy Nomination Event

On April 25, 2014, Congressman Levin hosted an event to recognize and congratulate the students that were nominated to the military service academies, who were offered appointments to West Point, The U.S. Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy.

Visit to Chippewa Valley Schools Erie Elementary

On April 24, 2014, Congressman Levin visited Chippewa Valley Schools Erie Elementary, for their first annual Community Leadership Day highlighting “The Leader in Me” program. Mr. Levin enjoyed talking with the bright, young students and was so impressed by their confidence and leadership skills they are developing.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

On April 23, 2014, Congressman Levin joined community leaders in Royal Oak to highlight the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 26th. Drug Take Back Day works to ensure that unused or unneeded medications are disposed of properly to prevent misuse.

Birmingham Youth Assistance Annual Breakfast

On April 17, 2014, Congressman Levin had breakfast with 37 outstanding young adults, from the Birmingham area. They were honored at the Birmingham Youth Assistance Annual Breakfast for their service to their communities. Mr. Levin Congratulated the students and the families that support them at the event.

Michgian Consumers for Heatlhcare Enroll Michigan 

On March 24, 2014, Congressman Levin joined Michigan Consumers for Healthcare to host an ACA Enrollment event in Sterling Heights for individuals interested in signing up for health care insurance on the new exchange. At the event individuals were able to learn more about ACA and receive one-on-one assistance.

Blessings in a Backpack

On March 19, 2014, Congressman Levin joined a group of dedicated volunteers in Royal Oak to prepare bags of food for students from low-income families to take home for the weekend. Having access to good nutrition and being free from hunger is so important, especially for our young people.

National Kick Butts Day

On Wednesday, March 18, 2014, Congressman Levin participated in a National Kick Butts Day event at Messmore Elementary in the Utica Community Schools, Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to speak up and take action against tobacco use at more than 1,000 events across the country.  Congressman Levin kicked off the program, speaking to 90 5th and 6th grade students and shared the dangers of using tobacco.

Fitzgerald Public Schools St. Patrick's Day Celebration

On Wednesday, March 18, 2014, Congressman Levin attended the Fitzgerald Public Schools St. Patrick's Day Celebration for local seniors.

2014 Automotive Summit

On Wednesday, March 18, 2014, Congressman Levin joined Senator Carl Levin at the 2014 Automotive Summit at the Manufacturing in America Symposium sponsored by Siemens and Electro-Matic held at Ford Field in Detroit.  Congressman Levin addressed the attendees to discuss his support for advanced manufacturing industry, and emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships with regard to Research and Development.

Utica Community Schools Outstanding Teacher Recognition

On Wednesday, March 18, 2014 Congressman Levin attended the Utica Community Schools Annual Outstanding Teacher Recognition.  He spent time congratulations the 3 teachers and their families and thanked them for their dedication before addressing the gathering.

Reading Month

On Tuesday, March 17, 2014, Congressman Levin visited the Kennedy Early Childhood Center in Van Dyke Public Schools as part of National Reading Month.  He read the Dr. Seuss classic: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to a Head Start class and also visited with an Early Head Start Class.

Boys and Girls Club of Oakland & Macomb Annual Celebrating the Future Dinner 

On Saturday, February 8th, Congressman Levin attended the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland and Macomb Counties annual Celebrating the Future dinner in Royal Oak.  The event featured performances by the young people who attend the club and the presentation of the Youth of the Year award.  Rep. Levin was humbled and honored to receive the first ever Champion of Youth award at the event.  You can read more by clicking here.

Race to College Dinner

On Saturday, February 8th, Congressman Levin attended a “Race to College” dinner event in support of the Hazel Park Promise Zone.  The event, held at the Hazel Park Raceway, was to highlight the good work that the Promise Zone is doing to provide a tuition-free first two-years of college for graduates of the Hazel Park School District.  Click here to read more about the dinner.

 

Sterling Heights Cultural Exchange

On Friday, February 7, 2014, Congressman Levin attended the Sterling Heights Cultural Exchange at the City’s Senior Center, which featured 21 ensembles of cultural entertainment and 20 local restaurants provided food.  Congressman Levin joined the City Council and State Rep. Henry Yanez serving food to guests, and also toured the different booths and he had the opportunity to speak with many organizations and residents.  Over 1,000 people attended the well-organized event.

Lunch and Listen with Unemployed Michiganders

On Friday, January 24, 2014 Congressman Levin and Congressman Gary Peters held a very powerful and emotional meeting with 65 unemployed workers at the Roseville Recreation Center. They heard stories from workers who were 40 to 50 years old, worked their entire lives, raised their families, and owned their homes only to lose their job and have this vital lifeline cut off during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Clinton State of the Township

On Friday, January 24, 2014 Congressman Levin attended the State of Clinton Township Address at the Clinton Macomb Public Library.  Supervisor Bob Cannon provided a positive outlook for the township’s future and Congressman Levin delivered a federal update from Washington D.C.

Anti-Drug Coalition Conference

On Thursday, January 23, 2014 Congressman Levin hosted an Anti-Drug Coalition Conference that 200 people attended from the Metro Area and from around the state.

Macomb County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner

On Wednesday, January 22, 2014 Congressman Levin attended the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner and Board inductions.

Sterling Heights Chamber of Commerce

Congressman Levin Open House

On Tuesday, January 21, 2014 Congressman Levin hosted an Annual Open House at his district office attended by over 100 representatives from business, education, labor, local governments, community organizations and service agencies to discuss various federal policy issues.

Interfaith Center for Racial Justice Macomb County MLK Day Celebration

On Monday January 20,2014evening Congressman Levin attended the annual Macomb County MLK Day celebration at Dakota High School.  Nearly 1,000 guests gathered to watch powerful presentations and performances by local choirs and students.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebrations - City of Warren MLK Day Celebration

On Monday, January 20, 2014 Congressman Levin attended the inaugural City of Warren MLK Celebration.  He spoke to the crowd of over 200 people and took part in the unveiling of a portrait of Dr. King that will remain on permanent display in the city hall atrium. 

Education Roundtable

On Saturday, January 18, 2014 Rep Levin, met with over 30 Superintendents and School Board members from Macomb and Oakland counties.  They talked about the many challenges facing our public schools and how the federal and state governments can and should help to address those challenges.

Michigan Consumers for Healthcare

On Monday & Tuesday December 16-17, 2013 Congressman Levin will be joining Michigan Consumers for Healthcare in hosting events in Eastpointe and Royal Oak for individuals interested in signing up for health care insurance on the new exchange. At the events individuals can learn more about ACA and receive one-on-one assistance.

Ukrainian Solidarity

On Sunday December 15, 2013 Congressman Levin joined local Ukrainian-Americans to show solidarity with Ukrainian demonstrators gathered in Kyiv’s EuroMaidan. Currently, scores of Ukrainians are protesting President Yanukovych’s eleventh-hour turn away from the European Union and democratic norms as well as the government’s violent crackdown on peaceful protestors in late November.

Launch of the Veterans History Project in Warren

On November 6, 2013, Mayor Fouts and Congressman Levin launched the Veterans History Project in Warren. It was an honor to listen to Veteran Sam Fittante who was drafted into the army in 1943 right after he finished high school. He served courageously as part of the 63rd Infantry Division. On February 9, 1945 his armored car was hit by enemy artillery and caught fire. He suffered severe burns on his arm and also was shot in the in the shoulder, unknowing at the time. Several years later an X-ray revealed the bullet which remains in him today. After spending a month in recovery, he rejoined his unit. After the war, Mr. Fittante returned home and used the GI Bill to attend Michigan State University where he received an engineering degree, and went on to have a successful career at General Motors and raise a family.

Reopening of West 9 Mile

On Saturday October 26, 2013 Congressman Levin joined with Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter and other Ferndale leaders to celebrated the reopening of West 9 Mile. The upgrades will be a huge benefit to the businesses on 9 Mile and residents in the nearby neighborhoods.

Team Levin goes pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Each year in the United States, 232,000 women are diagnosed with #breastcancer, 40,000 of whom die from the disease. Macomb Community College’s Announces $24.9 million Grant for the MCC-led Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing

On Monday, September 23, 2013, Congressman Levin joined Macomb Community College’s formal announcement today of the $24.9 million grant for the MCC-led Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing. The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for Community College program was included in the re-write of the TAA for workers program I wrote in 2009. MCC will focus on key sectors like CNC machining, welding/fabrication, multi-skilled technician and production operations and I am confident their leadership will make a difference in Macomb and around our State.

 

Bangladeshi Community Leaders Meeting 

On Tuesday, September 3, 2013, local Bangladeshi community leaders joined Congressman Levin at his District Office to regarding his recent trip to Bangladesh in August. The meeting reloved around thier shared  concerned about safety and labor issues which plague the garment industry, in Bangladesh and around the world.

Labor Day

On Monday, September 2, Congressman Levin started Labor Day walking in the Detroit Labor Day Parade followered by particpating in the Village of Franklin's annual Round Up festivities including a very well attended parade.  He finished the day with a longstanding Levin brother tradition and walked with Senator Carl Levin, in the Hamtramck Polish Day Parade.

Fitzgerald Public Schools’ Community Fair

On Wednesday, August 28th Congressman Levin attended the Fitzgerald Public Schools’ Community Fair held at Chatterton Middle School.  This back-to-school kickoff event was held for the first time and provided an opportunity for community members, parents, students and staff to gather for fun-filled family activities.

Berkley Community Center for an Ice Cream Social

On Tuesday, August 27th, Congressman Levin joined Mayor Phil O’Dwyer at the Berkley Community Center for an Ice Cream Social.  This was part of a series of SummerFest events hosted by the Berkley Parks and Rec Department, and provided an opportunity for Rep. Levin to meet with constituents during the August recess. 

Boys & Girls Club Alumni Reunion

On Sunday, July 14th, Congressman Levin stopped by the Jack & Patti Salter Community Center in Royal Oak, home of the Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland.  The Club was celebrating its 55th year of serving the youth in Royal Oak with an Alumni Reunion.  Rep. Levin is pictured here with retired Executive Director Jack Salter, retired Associate Director Don Reid and current Chief Professional Officer Brett Tillander.

American Polish Festival & Craft Show

On Saturday, July 13th Congressman Levin attended the annual American Polish Festival & Craft Show in Sterling Heights.  He participated as the honorary judge for the Pierogi eating contest between the Sterling Heights and Warren City Councils. 

Center Line Summer Nutrition program

On Friday, July 12th Congressman Levin visited the Center Line Parks and Recreation Center and met with young students having lunch as part of the federally funded Summer Nutrition program.

Center Line Prescription Drop-Box announcement

On Friday, July 12th, Congressman Levin participated in the unveiling of a new permanent drop-box for expired or unused prescription drugs at the City of Center Line’s Public Safety Department.  It is the 12th such box now located in Macomb County.  The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs is now the nation’s fastest growing drug problem. 

Summer Food Service Program site visits

On Wednesday, July 3rd, Congressman Levin visited Kelly Middle School in Eastpointe for breakfast and Wilkinson Middle School in Madison Heights for lunch to visit with students and families who were utilizing the Summer Food Service Program.  The SFSP is a federally-funded program that provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to help children in low-income areas throughout the summer months when they are out of school.  Sites in Michigan served more than 3.1 million meals to over 73,000 children in the summer of 2012.  To read more about the visits, click here .

A Place At The Table screening

On Tuesday, July 2nd Congressman Levin hosted a special screening of the documentary “A Place At The Table” which focuses on hunger issues in America and also debunks food assistance myths and provides a real life perspective on food insecurity.

Clinton River Visit

On Tuesday, July 2nd Congressman Levin joined local elected officials and water advocates from the League of Conservation Voters and Clean Water Action at George George Memorial Park by the Clinton River.  They highlighted the huge impact that two federal water programs – the Clean Water Revolving Fund and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative have been making in improving water quality in Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River.Michigan’s funding for both programs has been reduced by millions of dollars this year as a result of the across-the-board spending cuts – technically called “sequestration” – that were triggered when Congress and the Obama Administration could not reach agreement on a balanced plan to reduce the deficit. The clean water progress we are making could be at risk if Congress does not find a balanced replacement plan to prevent even deeper cuts to these programs next year.

Enroll America's Outreach Kick Off

On Saturday, June 22nd, Congressman Levin joined with volunteers and leaders from Enroll America and Covenant Community Health Center to help kick off Enroll America’s outreach to uninsured people in Michigan.  Enroll America is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose goals are to maximize the number of uninsured Americans who enroll in insurance under the Affordable Care Act.  There are 1.2 million uninsured people in Michigan, including 125,000 in Oakland County and 99,000 in Macomb County.  June 22nd marked 100 days from the October 1st, beginning of the open enrollment period.

MLK Freedom Walk

On Saturday, June 22nd, Congressman Levin joined thousands of others to participate in the MLK Freedom Walk down Woodward Avenue in Detroit.  The walk, from midtown down to Hart Plaza, was being held to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Dr. King’s march in Detroit, at the end of which he introduced an early version of his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.  Visit the Walk’s Facebook page to see more photos of this event, which was a moving tribute to Dr. King.

Grocery Shopping for the SNAP Challenge

On Monday, June 10th, Congressman Levin and Ferndale Mayor David Coulter began their participation in the SNAP Challenge: Live on a Food Stamp Budget by grocery shopping at Ferndale Foods, a grocery store where 20% of shoppers receive the food assistance.  They were joined by representatives from Forgotten Harvest, the United Way and Gleaners Community Food Bank. 

Rep. Levin and Mayor Coulter were each limited to $31.50, which is the average benefit for an individual for one week.  The purpose of the SNAP Challenge is to highlight the proposed $20.5 billion cuts to the food stamp program included in the House GOP’s Farm bill. Cutting these benefits by $20 billion will end SNAP for 2 million families nationwide.  Click here to view a video of Rep. St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital Discusses Sequestration and the Importance of ACA

On Friday, June 7th. Congressman Levin met with executives, doctors, and nurses at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren to discuss the effects of sequestration on the hospital, and the importance of the Affordable Care Act on patients’ health.

TACOM Employee Discuss Sequestration and Military Readiness

On Friday, June 7th, Congressman Levin held a roundtable discussion at Warren City hall with employees from TACOM about the impact of sequestration on their work and on military readiness.

Warren Cousino High School Class Visit  

On Friday, May 31st, Congressman Levin spoke to Ms. Roxanne Garrish’s AP Government class at Warren Cousino High School.  The students were very knowledgeable about many of the issues being debated in Congress, and Congressman Levin enjoyed the spirited discussion.

Birmingham Physicians 

On Tuesday, May 28th, Congressman Levin met at The Community House in Birmingham with physicians from Oakland and Macomb counties to discuss a variety of healthcare issues.

Naming of the Detroit Wayne County Port Authority 

On Thursday, May 2nd, Congressman Levin spoke at the Detroit Wayne County Port Authority at a ceremony naming the Port Authority’s passenger terminal and dock after U.S. Senator Carl Levin.

Visit to the United Way for Southeastern Michigan

On Wednesday, May 1st, Congressman Levin visited the headquarters of the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.  Rep. Levin was given a tour of the facility, learned about their many programs and listened to a 2-1-1 call for assistance.  He also spoke with their leadership about tax policy issues like the charitable tax deduction and the Child Tax Credit.  Visit the United Way’s website to learn more about their important work in Southeastern Michigan and to be connected with the many resources available to those in need.

Metro Coalition of Congregations

On Tuesday, April 30th, Congressman Levin met at American Lutheran Church in Clinton Township with pastors and lay leaders of the Metro Coalition of Congregations, where they discussed the need to reduce gun violence, the need for a strong social safety net, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and other issues.

Michigan Consumers for Healthcare Meeting regarding ACA

On Monday, April 29th. Congressman Levin met in his District Office with Don Hazaert and Dizzy Warren from Michigan Consumers for Healthcare to discuss their work and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

NAACP's 58th Annual Fight Freedom Dinner

On Sunday, April 28th, Congressman Levin joined thousands of people at the NAACP Detroit Branch’s 58th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.  U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was the dinner’s keynote speaker.

Eight Mile Boulevard Association’s Leadership Luncheon

On Friday, April 19th, Congressman Levin attended the Leadership Luncheon hosted by the Eight Mile Boulevard Association.  The annual event features a Q&A panel of the “Big 4” – the Mayor of Detroit and the County Executives from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties.  It provides an opportunity for leaders all across Metro Detroit to come together and discuss their ideas on how to move the region forward.  Visit 8MBA’s website to learn more about their efforts in the region.

Royal Oak Rotary Club’s Y.E.S. Auction

On Friday, April 19th, Congressman Levin attended the Royal Oak Rotary Club’s annual Y.E.S. (Youth, Education & Service) auction at the San Marino Club in Troy.  The group provides scholarships to high school seniors in Royal Oak, participates in the Blessings in a Backpack program providing sustenance to low-income students for the weekend, and supports youth-serving organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA of South Oakland.

Visit to the Independent Senior Living Facility “Village of Royal Oak”

On Thursday, April 4th Congressman Levin joined representatives from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and State Rep. Jim Townsend for a tour of an independent senior living facility in Royal Oak.  The project was funded by a number of federal sources including funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Funds and the Tax Credit Assistance Program.  The facility provides low-income seniors with a high-quality living facility.

Beverly Hills Village Communities Update

On Tuesday, April 2nd, Congressman Levin went to the Beverly Hills Village Hall to give the Village Council an update on federal legislation affecting communities in the 9th Congressional District.

Birmingham-Bloomfield Community Coalition’s Youth Dialogue Day 

On Tuesday, March 26th Congressman Levin attended the Birmingham-Bloomfield Community Coalition’s event, CHOICES: Youth Dialogue Day.  Rep. Levin took the opportunity to speak with the students about their experiences in school and the strength of their feelings about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.  The Coalition is currently receiving a Drug-Free Communities grant from the Office of National Drug Control policy.  Rep. Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce Meeting with Jeff Fleming

On Monday, March 11th. Congressman Levin met in his District Office with Jeff Fleming, an “Ambassador” for the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, to discuss the resources the Chamber provides to its members.

Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Reception

On Wednesday, March 27th, Congressman Levin attended the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Reception at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, where he had a chance to meet a number of business owners.

Lawrence Technological University

On Friday, March 8th, Congressman Levin attended a special convocation at Lawrence Technological University, where Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer received an honorary doctorate in computer science and engineering.

Visit to Royal Oak City Manager

On Tuesday, January 29th Congressman Levin met with Royal Oak City Manager Don Johnson and his staff.  Rep. Levin and city staff discussed city priorities and local projects and he provided an update on upcoming federal issues that will affect municipal governments.  

Royal Oak Chamber Annual State of the Chamber

On Wednesday, January 30th Congressman Levin attended the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce’s Annual State of the Chamber event.  Rep. Levin heard what has been happening with the Chamber over the last year.  He provided congratulatory certificates to the two outstanding volunteers who were honored for their service.

On Monday, January 28th, Congressman Levin met with Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon, Clerk Kim Meltzer and Treasurer Bill Sowerby to get an update on issues and happenings in the Township.  He then met with Police Chief Fred Poztavetz to discuss gun control issues.

“Reinventing Macomb” forum 

On Monday, January 28th, Congressman Levin participated in the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce semi-annual “Reinventing Macomb” forum at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township.  The forum was attended by a wide-range of business and elected leaders, and the federal, state and local official’s fielded questions on important issues we are facing.

City of Sterling Heights visit

On Friday, January 11th, Congressman Levin spent the morning visiting the City of Sterling Heights.  He toured the Senior Center and Life Fitness Center, an expansion that was funded by CDBG funding.  He also visited Velocity Collaboration Center for an overview from the city’s Economic Development Director, the Macomb OU-INCubator and Michigan Defense Center.  Lastly, Congressman Levin met with City Manager Mark Vanderpool, Mayor Dick Notte, Police Chief Mike Reese and Fire Chief Chris Martin to discuss various city issues.

Visits to New Communities – January 7, 2013

With the Congressional redistricting that occurs every ten years in accordance with the Census, Congressman Levin now represents the new 9th Congressional District, which is a slightly different constellation of communities in Macomb and Oakland counties.  He spent the first full week of the new Congress visiting the new communities he represents, as well as communities he has previously represented that are now in the 9th District.

DEA Prescription Drug Take Back Press Conference – September 27, 2012

On Thursday, September 27th took part in a Press Conference with Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, Sheriff Tony Wickersham, and Clinton Township Police Chief Fred Postavetz to raise awareness about the DEA’s semi-annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  They highlighted the 10 local coalitions in Macomb and their efforts to provide safe disposable locations for unused prescription medicines that might be harmful to our kids.

 

 

AIDS Walk Detroit – September 15, 2012

Congressman Levin helped to kick-off the 2012 AIDS Walk Detroit at the Royal Oak Farmers Market on September 16.  The Walk raises nearly $200,000 annually and supports a worthwhile cause.

Visit to Lighthouse Outreach Center – December 9, 2011

On Friday December 9th Congressman Levin visited Lighthouse Outreach Center in Roseville and met with food assistance providers throughout Macomb County and the region to discuss the issue of hunger at a time when the number of families receiving food assistance in Macomb County has nearly doubled since 2007.  Rep. Levin is a member of the Congressional Hunger Caucus, a bipartisan group dedicated to creating solutions to end domestic and international hunger and he has pushed for legislation that would expand and make permanent an important tax incentive for small businesses, farmers and ranchers to donate food inventory to charity.

Southfield International Festival - October 23, 2011

On Sunday, October 23rd, Congressman Levin attended the Southfield International Festival at the Southfield Pavilion. This is the annual festival to showcase the diversity of the city. It was kicked off on Friday with a citizenship swearing in ceremony.  

Damon J Keith Center for Civil Rights Grand Opening - October 19, 2011

On Wednesday, October 19th, Congressman Levin attended the grand opening ceremony for the Damon J Keith Center for civil rights at Wayne State University. Other dignitaries included Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder gave a video address for the nearly 600 attendees as they all honored the legacy of a great civil rights advocate.

Anti-Drug Coalition Conference – October 18, 2011

On Tuesday, October 18th Congressman Levin hosted a Conference for Anti-Drug Coalitions from throughout the Metro Detroit Area at Macomb Community College’s south campus.  Jack Claypoole, Administrator of the national Drug Free Communities (DFC) program was the featured speaker as well as other national experts from the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions Institute who conducted a wide variety of training workshops.  Over 125 people attended from various sectors of community and it was a very productive event that will help to continue and bolster local efforts by community anti-drug coalitions.

Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Madison Heights – September 26, 2011

On Monday, September 26, 2011, Congressman Levin was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Madison Heights City Council for his support of the Madison Heights Community Family Coalition (MHCFC).  In 2010, the MHCFC was awarded a federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant to lower and prevent instances of substance abuse in the community, particularly amongst youth.  Congressman Levin co-authored the legislation that created the federal DFC program.  To learn more about Congressman Levin’s work with local anti-drug coalitions and his efforts to bring additional DFC funding to the 12th District, click here.  

AIDS Walk Detroit – September 18, 2011

On Sunday, September 18th, Congressman Levin participated in the opening ceremony for the 15th AIDS Walk Detroit, held in downtown Royal Oak.  At the opening ceremony he addressed the thousands of walkers, thanking them for their efforts to fight for justice for those who have contracted the disease.  He then helped to lead the walkers in warm up exercises before sending them on their 5-kilometer walk.  To read more on the walk, which raised an estimated $200,000, click here.

10 Year Anniversary of 9/11 Memorial Ceremonies – September 11, 2011

Anti-defamation League/Birmingham Fire Department Memorial

On Sunday, September 11th, Congressman Levin joined Rep. Gary Peters and members of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) at the Adams Street Fire Station in Birmingham for a remembrance and dedication ceremony to unveil a special memorial, a steel remnant from the World Trade Center.  On the tenth anniversary of those tragic events, Congressman Levin reflected on the thousands of innocent victims and first responders who lost their lives.  To learn more about how the remnant was brought to Birmingham by the family of ADL Board member Lilly Stotland Epstein, click here.

Interfaith Center for Racial Justice’s 9/11 Memorial at Warren City Hall

Afterwards, Congressman Levin attended the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice’s 9/11  memorial program at Warren City Hall.  It was a solemn but moving ceremony as nearly 500 citizens gathered to pay their respects to the men and woman that lost their lives on that tragic day.

Macomb County Freedom Walk

Congressman Levin then traveled to Mt. Clemens to participate in a Freedom walk around the Macomb county courthouse. This program honored public safety officers throughout the county that lost their lives in the line of duty.

Interfaith Council of Southfield and Congregation Shaarey Zedek Memorial Program

In the evening Congressman Levin participated in the Interfaith Council of Southfield and congregation Shaarey Zedek memorial program. The program focused the need for us to build on the unity the nation felt in the wake of a national tragedy.

Ford Van Dyke Transmission plant family open house – August 28, 2011

On Sunday, August 28th Congressman Levin attended the Ford Van Dyke Transmission Plants family open house.  The Van Dyke Plant opened in 1968 in Sterling Heights and currently has 1,260 employees. The open house was the first in 11 years, and Congressman Levin enjoyed meeting the men and women who work there, as well as their families.

Hazel Park Promise Zone event – August 26, 2011

On Friday, August 26th, Congressman Levin showed his strong support for the Hazel Park Promise Zone, by visiting with participants of a Pub Crawl being held to benefit the Promise Zone.  The program, one of only ten in the state, is designed to provide high school graduates in the city a scholarship to attend college or a trade school.  Rep. EPA Grant Announcement – August 26, 2011

On Friday, August 26th Congressman Levin joined with U.S. Rep. John Dingell, Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in announcing four Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grants totaling $2.2 million to organizations, agencies, and universities working in the Detroit area, two of them in Macomb County.  These four grants are among 70 totaling nearly $30 million awarded by EPA under the GLRI in 2011 and will target runoff pollution, coastal wetlands restoration, and hazardous and medical waste that afflict local rivers and streams in our area.

Visit to Supreme Gear Company – August 25, 2011

On Thursday, August 25th Congressman Levin visited Supreme Gear Company (a defense contractor) in Fraser. Supreme Gear was founded over 60 years ago and is a Tier II minority owned defense supplier. They provide creative machined solutions to aerospace, defense, commercial and other related industries.

 

Adopt-a-Road in Macomb County – August 25, 2011

On Thursday, August 25th Congressman Levin “Adopted-a-Road” in Macomb County in support of County Executive Mark Hackel’s efforts to reinvigorate the program, created almost 30 years ago. He was joined by local elected officials from Clinton Township and volunteers who helped clean up trash and debris from the side of the road which is Harper Road from Metro Parkway to 15 Mile Rd.

Macomb Community College Defense Sector classroom visit – August 24, 2011

On Wednesday, August 24th Congressman Levin visited Macomb Community College students enrolled in the worker retraining program funded by a $5 million Department of Labor Grant aimed at preparing students for jobs in the defense sector. Through this grant, 1,600 people will receive training and nearly 1,000 of those are expected to quickly land jobs after completing the program.

 

 

 

 

Macomb County Chamber Reinventing Macomb forum – August 23, 2011

On Tuesday, August 23rd Congressman Levin participated in the Macomb County Chamber’s 2nd  “Reinventing Macomb” forum held at the Barrister Gardens Banquet Center in Saint Clair Shores.  The event was attended by about 100 business people and elected officials throughout Macomb County.  Congressman Levin, Congresswoman Candice Miller, State Senator Steve Bieda and State Representatives Marilyn and Tony Forlini were the featured speakers.

Visit to FernCare Free Clinic’s permanent site – August 22, 2011

On Monday, August 22nd, Congressman Levin participated in a Hard Hat Tour of FernCare Free Clinic’s permanent home on East Nine Mile in Ferndale, which was made possible in part due to a $150,000 earmark made by the congressman.  Previously the clinic had been operating on a temporary basis at the Kulick Community Center in Ferndale, where volunteers would have to set up, tear down and completely sterilize the center each clinic day.  The clinic currently provides non-emergency medical care including lab testing, social work counseling, community resource access assistance, and dispensing generic medication.  To read more on the earmark, which was passed in 2009, click here.

Social Security Discussion with Seniors – August 22, 2011

Macomb County Economic Development hearing – August 18, 2011

On Thursday, August 18th Congressman Levin testified at a Macomb County Board of Commissioners Economic Development Committee hearing highlighting electric battery technology being utilized in the automotive industry and solar panel installation on rooftops.  The hearing took place at the IBEW Local #58’s Electrical Industry Training Center. Congressman Levin’s remarks highlighted that the Recovery Act invested $2.4 billion in advanced battery and electric vehicle projects in America, and that Michigan companies received far more of this funding than any other state – $1.3 billion, or just over half the total amount of money available.

Flag Presentation to Warren Historical Commission – August, 17 2011

On Wednesday, August 17th Congressman Levin presented a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol on the 4th of July to Mayor Fouts and the Warren Historical Commission at City Hall. The flag will later be raised and flown at the Warren Union Cemetery located on Old Chicago Road.

 

F-35 Cockpit Demonstration – August 17, 2011

On Wednesday, August 17th Congressman Levin attended F-35 Cockpit Demonstrator media event at Futuristic Tool and Engineering Company in Warren. The event highlighted the F-35 program and the capabilities that this aircraft will provide our US Air Force, US Navy, US Marine Corps, as well as our eight international partners and closest allies. This program further promotes the role Macomb County is playing in the defense industry.

Visit to Motovicity Distribution – August 16, 2011

On Tuesday, August 16th, Congressman Levin, in his role as co-chair of the Performance Motorsports Caucus, visited Motovicity Distribution in Madison Heights.  The visit was set up by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), the trade association for after-market auto equipment, with an emphasis on performance motorsports.  Motovicity, a member of SEMA, is an after-market parts distributor.  The congressman toured the facility and spoke with company representatives about their plans for future development and additional hiring.  Click here to read more about the visit. 

Visit to Jewish Senior Life apartments for Michigan Jubilee event – August 15, 2011

On Monday, August 15th, Congressman Levin joined residents and staff from the Jewish Senior Life apartments in Oak Park for their “JSL Stands with Michigan” event.  This was the first day of a week-long event celebrating Michigan and the Jewish community.  It featured kosher hot dogs and fresh popcorn as well as live music and a petti

Macomb County Senior Safety Conference – August 4, 2011

On Thursday, August 4th Congressman Levin attended the Macomb County Senior Safety Conference at the Intermediate School District in Clinton Township.  He provided an update on his efforts in Washington D.C. to protect Medicare and Social Security to the over 150 seniors in attendance.  Seniors also heard presentations from Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, Sheriff Tony Wickersham and Prosecutor Eric Smith on current senior crime trends, scams and fraud, and how to protect themselves from these abuses.

Fraser Sewer Project Ribbon Cutting – July 9, 2011

On Saturday, July 9th Congressman Levin joined the Fraser City Council at a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the Hayes Road Interceptor Sewer project.  The nearly $13 million dollar project was paid for in part with a $4.9 million grant from the Recovery Act, while the rest was financed through a low-interest loan from the State Revolving Loan Fund, in which the federal government provides most of the capitalization funds. In 2009 Congressman Levin worked hard to ensure Clean Water funding in the Recovery Act and Michigan’s share was $168 million.  The completion of the project will help to end the dumping of raw sewage into Lake St. Clair during heavy rainfall that overwhelmed the system. 

Tour of Red Run Drain and George W. Kuhn Retention Treatment Basin – June 30, 2011

On Thursday, June 30th, Congressman Levin and Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner John McCulloch were joined by members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and staff from the Water Resources Office for a tour of the Red Run Drain and the George W. Kuhn Retention Treatment Basin in Warren and Madison Heights, respectively.  The Drain provides an outlet for the Retention Treatment Basin, which services approximately 250,000 people in southeast Oakland County.  It carries storm water and treated wastewater 9 miles through Macomb County before connecting to the Clinton River and, ultimately, Lake St. Clair.  

The Red Run Drain project consists of many different elements, including drain rehabilitation, e-coli reduction efforts, shoal removal and bank stabilization.  It will reduce pollution and sedimentation in the Red Run Drain, the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair.  This project costs $5.1-million, 75% of which (or $3.8-million) is coming from a Recovery Act grant. The Corps agreed to provide Recovery Act funding for the Red Run Drain improvements at the emphatic urging of Rep. Levin and Senator Carl Levin.

Human Capital Forum in Warren – June 30, 2011

On Thursday, June 30th, Congressman Sandy Levin spoke at the Defense Sector Human Capital Forum in Warren. This forum was a dialogue between defense industry officials and members of the workforce development community. Mr. Levin gave welcoming remarks to the group and talked about the importance of Macomb County to the defense industry and the benefit of the retraining programs.

 

Medicare Discussion with Seniors – June 29, 2011

Visit to BAE Systems in Sterling Heights – June 17, 2011

On Friday, June 17th, Congressman Sandy Levin and Senator Carl Levin visited the new BAE Systems facility in Sterling Heights. This will be their new prototype and testing facility as well as the largest facility to be built in Sterling Heights in many years. Once completed, BAE expects to have between 300-400 employees working there.  Congressman Levin met with company representatives and took a tour of the facility.

 

 

 

TACOM Logistics Building Grand Opening in Warren – June 17, 2011

On Friday, June 17th Congressman Levin and Senator Levin participated in the TACOM ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new logistics building. The new facility will house approximately 1,200 personnel from the Rock Island, Ill. facility as part of the BRAC 2005 recommendations. Congressman Levin gave brief remarks helped cut the ribbon. He was joined by his brother, Senator Carl Levin along with Major General Stein and Granger Construction President Glenn Granger.

On Friday, May 20th Congressman Levin attended the Bricklayers’ Local # 1 Retiree Luncheon in Livonia joining over 200 retirees.  Local #1 of Michigan currently has 3,100 members that work in its jurisdictional area covering Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Monroe counties, who build the schools, churches and buildings in all of our communities that are of the highest quality.

On Friday, May 20th Congressman Levin held a Town Hall meeting with area suppliers at RCO Engineering in Roseville.  The focus of the meeting was to discuss the Pentagon’s proposalto shut-down the U.S. Army’s Abrams tank program for a three year period.  Congressman Levin has been a vocal advocate against the proposal as the tank upgrade program has been a cornerstone of Michigan’s defense industrial base for 30 years, and is a vital component necessary to keeping our troops safe overseas.   

 

 

 

 

Macomb County Chamber Defense Industry Town Hall Meeting – May 19, 2011

On Thursday, May 19th Congressman Levin participated in a discussion with members of the National Defense Industry Association.  Over fifty defense industry suppliers attended, sharing their views, asking questions and taking part in back and forth dialogue on issues of concern to them. Also participating in the town hall was Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, Macomb County Commissioner Dave Flynn and Macomb Community College President Dr. Jim Jacobs.

Clinton River Watershed Council retirement gathering – May 18, 2011

On Wednesday, May 18th Congressman Levin attended a retirement gathering for Dan Kiefer, a longtime staff member for the Clinton River Watershed Council.  As a passionate advocate for maintaining and strengthening the watershed, Dan’s work included telling the watershed story through community outreach and maintaining strategic alliances with local partners as well as statewide, water related activities.  Congressman Levin presented Mr. Keifer with a Congressional Record Statement paying tribute to his career in fighting for water quality.

U.S. Service Academy Appointments Reception – May 18, 2011

On Wednesday, May 18th Congressman Levin hosted a reception to honor four students he nominated for appointments to the U.S. Service Academy’s at Ferndale High School.  Joining Congressman Levin and the student appointees were over fifty family, friends, teachers, counselors, administrators and members of the nomination selection committee.  

Congressman Levin’s Congressional Art Competition Reception – May 17, 2011

On Tuesday, May 17th Congressman Levin hosted his annual Congressional Arts reception at Warren City Hall recognizing the artistic talents of high school students throughout the 12th District.  This is a national competition now in its 30th year, and the winning artwork will hang in the Capitol for the entire year.  The first place winner is DiAndre’ Johnson with an untitled pencil drawing of a building’s frieze.  DiAndre’ is a 12th grader at Mount Clemens High School.    The second place winner is Maggie Mirowski.  Maggie is an 11th grader from Centerline High School.  Her winning artwork done in tempera and India ink is called “From the Top”.  The third place winner is Arnell Adams with a pencil drawing called “Buffalo Skull”.  Arnell is a 12th grader from Ferndale High School.  

Trade Adjustment Assistance Summit – May 17, 2011

On Tuesday, May 17th Congressman Levin hosted a Trade Adjustment Assistance Summit at Fitzpatrick Manufacturing in Sterling Heights.  In addition to touring the impressive, state of the art facility, participants took part in a discussion focused on efforts to renew the four Trade Adjustment Assistance programs that have had a vital impact on local economic development: TAA for Communities, TAA for Firms, TAA for Workers and TAA for Community Colleges.  The conversation made clear that all of these programs work together and are vital to the economic transformation underway in Michigan.

Macomb Hall of Fame Press Conference – May 17, 2011

On Tuesday, May 17th Congressman Levin attended the Macomb Foundation’s Hall of Fame Press Conference in Clinton Township introducing this year’s Hall of Fame inductees.  Congressman Levin is one of this year’s inductees, along with retired Macomb County Judge George Steeh, U.S. District Court Judge George Carem Steeh III , Macomb County Chief Judge Mark Switalski, General Kurt Stein, retired Commander U.S. Army TACOM Lifecycle Mgmt and Maggie Varney of Wigs 4 Kids.  The 11th Annual Hall of Fame Dinner, which will be attended by over 500 business and civic leaders will be held in October at the Mirage Banquet Center in Clinton Township.

Congressman Levin’s Women’s History Essay Competition – April 28, 2011

On Thursday, April 28th Congressman Levin visited Lincoln Middle School in Warren to announce the winners of the Women’s History Essay Competition held by his office.  This is the third year that Congressman Levin has held the competition in honor of Women’s History Monthand 276 students participated from schools throughout the district.  Students were asked to submit essays between 250 and 500 words identifying a woman who inspired them and essays were judged by a group of seven active members of the community.  Each winner received an autographed “Women in Congress” book and the winning essays are featured on Rep. Levin’s congressional Web site.

Chinese American Student Summit II – April 28, 2011

On Thursday, April 28th Congressman Levin attended the 2nd Chinese American Student Summit held at the Macomb Intermediate School District.  The Summit was organized by Lake Shore High School Superintendent Chris Loria, whose district has developed an outstanding Chinese student visitor program, and currently has over forty Chinese students attending Lake Shore.   Macomb County Deputy Executive Mark Deldin was the keynote speaker at the summit.  The Chinese students were joined by over 150 students from school districts across Macomb County to share their different cultural experiences and interview each other, discussing the benefits, challenges, and opportunities their generation faces in our global society. 

International Business Center Grand Opening – April 28, 2011

On Thursday, April 28th Congressman Levin participated in the grand opening of Automation Alley’s International Business Center.  Automation Alley has been one of the leaders in fostering the economic transformation underway in Southeastern Michigan.  Congressman Levin gave brief remarks and toured the facility of the building.

Forum with Jewish Community Relations Council– April 21, 2011

On Thursday, April 21st Congressman Levin met with the leadership of the Jewish Community Relations Council and other members of the Jewish community to present them with an update on congressional activities.  The meeting, held at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park, provided an opportunity for the constituents to discuss national issues of interest to them, such as Israel and the funding of social service programs and education.

Anti-Drug Coalition Forum with ONDCP Deputy Director– April 21, 2011

On Thursday, April 21st Congressman Levin hosted a Forum at Warren City Hall headlined by Ben Tucker, Deputy Director Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).  Over twenty-five members from local anti-drug coalitions throughout Macomb and Oakland Counties participated.  Deputy Director Tucker gave a perspective from the ONDCP on initiatives and efforts to fight the battle against drugs, and local coalition members shared with him what they are seeing in their individual communities and their efforts to educate and prevent youth from using drugs and alcohol.

Visit to St. John’s Providence Hospital, Macomb - April 20, 2011

On Wednesday, April 20th, Congressman Sandy Levin visited St. John’s Providence Hospital in Warren and met with patients, physicians and Administrators.  A special focus was the importance of the Medicare program to patients and hospitals, as over half of the patients at St. John’s Macomb Hospital rely on Medicare for their health coverage.  Congressman Levin toured the Hip & Knee Replacement Center, an orthopedic program for joint replacement, that has been designated a Blue Distinction Centerby Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and spoke with patients and medical staff.  The Congressman discussed with them the House Republican’s budget that would end Medicare and lead to doubling of costs for patients. 

Visit to Head Start class at Little Learners Dooley Center – April 19, 2011

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Congressman Levin visited a Head Start class at Little Learners Dooley Center in the Fraser school district.  He also met with a group of a half dozen parents who passionately shared their feelings about what the program means to their children and family.  Together, the Early Head Start and Head Start programs provide kids aged 0-5 with comprehensive services in education, health, disability, and social services to promote school readiness and enhance social and cognitive development.  The long-term benefits of these programs yield higher grades in K-12 classes, fewer dropouts, reduced poverty, and greater parental involvement.  At the event, the parents and Head Start administrators stressed to Rep. Levin the devastating impact a 9% cut in federal funding, as passed in the House Republican 2012 budget, would have on their children.

National Day of Action Rally – April 4, 2011 

On Monday, April 4th Congressman Levin attended the National Day of Action Rally at Kennedy Park in Downtown Mt. Clemens.  Congressman Levin spoke to the attendees addressed the budget proposals at both the state and federal levels that are harmful to working families and Michigan’s recovering economy.

Como’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary – March 25, 2011

On Friday, March 25th Congressman Levin visited Como’s in Ferndale to help celebrate the restaurant’s 50th Anniversary.  Before enjoying some of their delicious pizza, the congressman presented owner Sicilia Grego with an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington in honor of the occasion.  “You’re warm even when it’s cold outside,” Levin said of the restaurant.

 

Oak Park and Royal Oak Twp. Community Resource Fair – March 24, 2011

On Thursday, March 24th Congressman Levin hosted a Community Resource Fair at Oak Park High School.  The purpose of the resource fair was to connect local residents with a wide range of federal, state, local, and non-profit agencies that provide various assistance to those in need during these difficult economic times.  In all, thirty-one vendors participated sharing a vast array of resources available to the residents that stopped by.

 

 

Warren State of the City Address – March 24, 2011

On Thursday, March 24th Congressman Levin attended the annual Warren State of the City Address at Andiamo's Banquet Hall.  Over 500 people, including residents and business and elected leaders attended, and Mayor Jim Fouts provided an update on the progress of the city in the last year, new initiatives and economic developments.

12th Congressional District Mayors and City Managers meeting - March 23, 2011

On Wednesday, March 23rd Congressman Levin met with Mayors and City Managers from every community throughout the 12th Congressional District in St. Clair Shores.   Congressman Levin provided the officials with an update on federal issues, primarily the House Majority Republican budget proposal, and how it would negatively impact their communities back home. The officials also updated Congressman Levin on issues of concern in their local communities.

Chambers of Commerce Roundtable – March 22, 2011

On Tuesday, March 22nd Congressman Levin hosted a roundtable discussion with the leadership and members of a dozen local chambers of commerce.  The group discussed current issues and the local business environment in Michigan.   Paul Brown from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Don Morandini from U.S. Small Business Administration made presentations about small business financing and access to lending and capital.

Education Cuts Forum - March 21, 2011

On Monday, March 21st Congressman Levin hosted a forum at Cousino High School to discuss the proposed devastating cuts to education at both the federal and state levels.  Congressman Levin was joined by State Senator Steve Bieda, State Representatives Jon Switalski and Lesia Liss, and five Warren and Center Line school district Superintendents and Business Managers.  The school officials spoke very candidly about how the combined cuts would have crippling effects on their districts and explained the very deep cuts they have already made over the last several years.

Navistar Defense Grand Opening in Madison Heights – March 21, 2011

On Monday, March 21st Congressman Levin participated in the Navistar Defense ribbon-cutting ceremony. This event marked yet another positive sign of the economic transformation underway in Michigan and emergence of the Defense Industry in Oakland and Macomb counties.  Congressman Levin gave brief remarks and toured the facility.  He was joined by Senator Carl Levin as well as several state and local officials.

Macomb County Fire Chiefs Association Annual Dinner – February 25, 2011

On Friday, February 25th Congressman Levin attended the Macomb County Fire Chiefs Association Annual Dinner in Sterling Heights.  Approximately 200 local fire and police officials, Mayors, City Managers, County Commissioners and State Legislators were in attendance from every community throughout Macomb County.  Congressman Levin gave brief remarks on the grave importance of fully funding public safety and our first responders.

Visit to Chapaton Drain Facility – February 25, 2011

On Friday, February 25th Congressman Levin toured the Chapaton Drain Facility in St. Clair Shores and was joined by Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Tony Marrocco, Mayor Robert Hison and various other officials involved in the project.  The county has made a number of the improvements to the facility, which handles sewage, with the help of funding from the federal Clean Water Revolving Fund program.  The Revolving Fund provides grants and very low-interest loans to localities to make sewer improvements.

Trade Adjustment Assistance Roundtable Discussion with Workers – February 24, 2011

On Thursday, February 24th Congressman Levin and Congressman Gary Peters met with a group of residents at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield who are receiving retraining through the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program.   The program was created to assist workers laid off as a result of international trade by helping them retrain and acquire skills needed to compete in the global environment.  It was improved in 2009 to includeservice industry workers.   Since the improvements in May 2009, more than 170,000 additional trade-impacted workers, who may not have been certified under the “old” TAA for Workers program, became eligible for benefits and training opportunities.  On February 12th, House Majority Republicans allowed the 2009 improvements to lapse, which as a result, does not allow service workers to become TAA eligible going forward.

Social Security Administration employees Roundtable Discussion – February 23, 2011

On Wednesday, February 23rd Congressman Levin met with a group of Social Security Administration (SSA) employees at the Roseville Community Center to discuss how the proposed cuts to SSA from the House Majority Republicans would devastate the agency and the beneficiaries it serves.  The cuts would leave the already cash-strapped agency with far fewer resources with which to process claims for seniors, widows and widowers and people with disabilities, issue new Social Security cards to families with newborns, reduce overpayments to safeguard Social Security’s trust fund for future beneficiaries, conduct appeals hearings for disability applicants, answer phone calls from individuals whose checks are missing and record wages of workers to make sure they receive all the benefits they have earned.

Visit to Advanced Integrated Tooling Solutions – June 2, 2010

On Wednesday, June 2, 2010 Congressman Levin visited the new Michigan home of Advanced Integrated Tooling Solutions (AIT). AIT is an aerospace supplier who recently moved to Macomb County. They will bring over 200 jobs to Macomb County over the next 5 years, with an estimated 100 jobs so far this year. They picked their 312,000 square foot facility in Macomb County because of the proximity to engineering and tooling expertise and the “can do” workforce. They’ve been in this facility for approximately 11 weeks. Rep. Levin met with company executives as well as county and township officials and discussed their aggressive job creation and recruitment efforts.

Chippewa Valley High School visit to recognize Academy appointments – June 2, 2010

On Wednesday, June 2, 2010 Congressman Levin visited Chippewa Valley High School to congratulate two students he nominated to the U.S. Service Academies that were offered appointments. Benjamin Miller will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Skyler Raybin will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Administrators, teachers, counselors, parents and a Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer were on hand to join in the recognition.

Jobs Bill Roundtable Discussion – June 1, 2010

On Tuesday, June 1, 2010 Congressman Levin hosted a roundtable discussion at the Michigan Works! Service Center in Warren on the immense impact that H.R. 4213, the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act will have on Michigan residents and business. Participants included local unemployed workers who are currently receiving retraining, summer jobs participants and coordinators, representatives from Eaton Corporation, the Michigan Magnet Fund, Warren Consolidated Schools, Guardian Industries, Forgotten Harvest and General Motors. Each spoke to important provisions in the bill that would help their company maintain and create jobs for local Michigan residents.

Meeting with Seniors on $250 Rebate - June 1, 2010

On Tuesday, June 1, 2010 Congressman Levin met with a group of two dozen seniors at Owen Jax Recreation Center in Warren to discuss the closing of the gap in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage known as the “Doughnut Hole.” Health care reform provides a $250 rebate to all beneficiaries who enter the doughnut hole in 2010. Beginning in 2011, the law provides a 50% discount on brand-name drugs in the doughnut hole. Additional discounts phase in for brand name and generic medicines until the doughnut hole is completely closed.

Real Faces of Health Care Event – March 31, 2010

On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 Congressman Levin held a roundtable discussion with 25 residents throughout the district that he met with over the past year to discuss the new health care reform law. Congressman Levin actually held the first health care roundtable over a year ago at the same location. Participants shared very personal stories about the immense challenges they face with being locked out of our health care system or incurring extremely high, burdensome costs. Many of the hardships with health coverage that were shared, were due to either themselves or someone in their family having a pre-existing condition.

Friend of Philanthropy – March 17, 2010

Rep. Levin was recently recognized as a “Friend of Philanthropy” for 2010 by the Council on Foundations. The Council presented this award to Rep. Levin on March 17th in recognition of his leadership on tax incentives to promote charitable giving and support the work of foundations.

Local Law Enforcement Technology - February 18, 2010

On Thursday, February 18, 2010, Congressman Levin held a meeting with local law enforcement to highlight the recent $1.025 million dollar grant that CLEMIS (Oakland County's Courts and Law Enforcement Management Information System) will be receiving. The grant will be used to purchase cutting-edge technology and equipment, including palm print identification devices and the portable electronic fingerprinting device being demonstrated in the above picture. CLEMIS provides communication's and shared criminal justice information between more than 100 law enforcement agencies in Southeast Michigan.

Macomb County Pantry Day visit – February 17, 2010

On Wednesday, February 17, 2010, Congressman Levin visited the Macomb County Food Distribution facility where dozens of great volunteers loaded donated food to send off to local pantries, churches, and soup kitchens. Pantry Day occurs the first and third Wednesday of every month and is under the direction of the Macomb County Community Services Agency Food Program, which runs the operation with minimal staff and the rest are volunteers. There are 55 local pantries in Macomb County that distribute food to those in need. SMART Bus Dedication – February 12, 2010

On Friday, February 12, 2010, Congressman Levin joined officials from SMART and the City of Southfield on February 12, 2010, to celebrate the arrival of two new buses. The buses will expand Southfield’s Community Partnership Program, which provides curb-to-curb transit service to seniors and persons with disabilities living in Southfield. Last year, the program provided more than 13,000 rides to Southfield residents. Both buses are made in Michigan and are biodiesel compatible. Rep. Southfield Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Peace Walk - January 18, 2010

On Monday, January 18, 2010, Congressman Levin along with U.S. House Majority Whip Congressman James Clyburn participated in the annual Peace Walk. Over 2,200 people participated in the annual celebration. Congressman Clyburn, who met Dr. King during the Civil Rights Movement, gave some brief remarks. The Southfield Peace Walk is the oldest and largest event honoring Dr. King in Michigan. This is Southfield’s 25th year hosting the Peace Walk. Rep. Levin is pictured with Rep. First U.S. Assembly Plant for Advanced Vehicle Batteries Opens in Michigan - January 7, 2010

On Thursday, January 7, Congressman Levin, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Governor Granholm, Congressman John Dingell, and Senator Carl Levin were on hand as the first lithium-ion battery pack for the Chevy Volt came off the assembly line at the new GM battery plant located in Brownstown, Michigan. General Motors and the federal government have invested well over $100 million in the Brownstown plant, which assembles advanced lithium-ion battery packs for the Chevy Volt. The Brownsville plant is the first battery pack assembly factory in the U.S. operated by a major automaker.

Royal Oak Township Seniors Dedication Ceremony- October 24, 2009

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, Congressman Levin attended a special event honoring residents of Royal Oak Township who are 90 years of age and older who have played an instrumental role in the Township. There were 25 residents in total receiving this honor. Rep. Levin is pictured with Douglas Anderson, age 92, who was the Royal Oak Township Supervisor from 1968-1974.

 

City of Warren “Trunk-and-Treat”- October 24, 2009

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, Congressman Levin attended the 4th Annual Warren Trunk and Treat at the Warren City Hall Parking Structure. This was a great community event where kids came dressed up in costumes and residents of the community handed out candy from car trunks in Halloween themed areas. Rep. Celebrating Success with the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities – October 12, 2009

Congressman Levin is honored alongside long-time anti-drug coalition leaders Margaret Blount, Deputy Lewis Tyler of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and Karen Rimatzki for their work to reduce youth substance abuse. Levin co-authored the Drug Free Communities Support Program in 1997 to strengthen the grassroots work of community anti-drug coalitions. Today, the program supports more than 700 anti-drug coalitions across the country.

Groundbreaking for new Ground Systems Power and Energy Lab at TARDEC -- August 17, 2009

Congressman Levin joined Senators Levin and Stabenow and other community leaders at the groundbreaking for the new Ground Systems Power and Energy Lab at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren. The new laboratory, which is funded by the federal government, will provide needed laboratory space for development of engines, fuel cells and energy storage devices, as well as enable TARDEC to expand its power and energy program. When completed, the new lab complex will enable TARDEC to test both entire vehicles and individual vehicle components, and guide the Army's next generation of advanced ground vehicles.

Weatherization Program in Madison Heights – August 19, 2009

Congressman Levin visited a home in Madison Heights for a demonstration of the weatherization process. The Weatherization Program, administered by the Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency, provides funding for energy efficiency upgrades for qualified homeowners in Oakland County. Through the Recovery Act, $5 billion was allocated for the Weatherization Assistance Program. Michigan received $250 million for the program. Within our district, Oakland County received $11 million and Macomb County received $8 million for weatherization projects.

Grand Opening of the Macomb-OU INCubator - July 21, 2009

On July 21, 2009, Congressman Levin joined local, state and federal officials to celebrate the grand opening of the Macomb-OU INCubator in Sterling Heights. The incubator is a collaboration of the Macomb County Department of Economic Development, Oakland University, and the private sector. It will provide office space, strategic advice, and a range of business services to promising start-ups, small businesses and entrepreneurs. The mission of the Macomb-OU INCubator is to create jobs and contribute to the diversification of the Southeast Michigan economy by fostering the growth of businesses in the defense, alternative energy and advanced manufacturing sectors. Rep. Levin helped to secure federal funding to support this important initiative.

Health Care Town Hall Meeting - July 3, 2009

On July 3rd, Congressman Levin attended a town hall meeting on Healthcare Reform hosted by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) at the Clinton-Macomb Library. Rep. Levin took questions and listened to their concerns, which reinforced the need to reform our health care system and keep the best of our current system and fix what is broken, so working families all across America can have access to affordable coverage.

 

 

Stop Hunger Kick-Off Event - July 2, 2009

On July 2, 2009, Congressman Levin attended a kick-off event for a summer long drive to feed hungry kids in southeast Michigan. A mobile pantry, provided by Ford Fund and Suburban Ford of Waterford and Sterling Heights, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Forgotten Harvest and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan are pushing to deliver 500,000 meals a day to those in need. Currently, 600,000 people in Wayne, Oakland or Macomb counties face hunger each day. Rep. Levin is the author of legislation to expand and make permanent an important tax incentive for small businesses, farmers and ranchers to donate food inventory to charity.

Michigan Works! Event at the Warren Consolidated School District Career Prep Center - July 1, 2009

On July 1, 2009, Congressman Levin also had the opportunity to visit the Career Prep Center in Warren Michigan. The program at Prep Center provides the opportunity for students to get practical experience in horticulture, which could lead to green jobs in fields such as bio-fuels in the future.

Oakland Healthcare Roundtable - July 1, 2009

On July 1, 2009, Congressman Levin held a healthcare roundtable at Providence Hospital in Southfield. Congressman Levin provided an update on the status of healthcare reform efforts in Congress. During the roundtable, Rep. Levin spoke about the Healthcare Improvements for Generating High Performance Act (or HIGH Performance Act), which will build on Michigan’s success helping hospitals implement best practices in health care.

Hazel Park Community Resource Fair, June 30, 2009

On June 30, 2009, Congressman Levin held a Community Resource Fair for the residents of Hazel Park. Experts from various agencies such as Michigan Works!, Oakland County Housing, Social Security and the IRS were present and ready to provide residents useful information. Rep. Levin will be holding several of these events throughout the 12th Congressional District in the upcoming months.

Michigan Works! Event at Beaumont Hospital - June 30, 2009

On June 30, 2009, Congressman Levin had the opportunity to visit Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak to see a summer job training program funded by the Recovery Act. This training program is for youth ages 16-24 and provides work experience in various fields like healthcare. Rep. Levin joined the students as they worked and heard from graduates of the training program who are now pursuing healthcare careers.

TACOM Groundbreaking- May 18, 2009

On May 18, 2009, Congressman Levin participated in the groundbreaking ceremony at the TACOM Headquarters in Warren. TACOM will be building new structures on the Detroit Arsenal, which will further their ability to serve the military and add local jobs. The expansion will include a multi-story, 230,340 square foot administration building and a 583,750 square foot parking structure.

Warren Tour with Dr. Ed Montgomery – May 8, 2009

On May 8, 2009, Congressman Levin and other local leaders met with Dr. Ed Montgomery, President Obama’s Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, in Warren to hear from local officials and workers on the best solutions for Michigan’s economic recovery. Congressman Levin had the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Montgomery ways to ensure that the full resources of the federal government are getting to the workers, the families, and communities in Michigan.

Healthcare Roundtable May 26, 2009

On May 26, 2009 Congressman Levin held a Healthcare Roundtable at the Madison Heights City Fire Department. This roundtable consisted of 80 participants and gave Rep. Levin the opportunity to connect with Michigan residents on healthcare reform and issues of concern to them.

 

 

Macomb County Courthouse May 28, 2009

On May 28, 2009, Congressman Levin visited the Macomb County Courthouse where he received a first-hand look at how the new juror pager program will benefit jurors and downtown Mt. Clemens. Residents called for jury duty will be assigned pagers and be able to shop or eat downtown while they wait.. After passing out pagers, Rep. Levin, walked over to Conga Tea and Coffee and joined a juror there buying a coffee. Many jurors were sitting on benches reading and just enjoying the outdoors.

Macomb County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh proposed this innovation in 2007 and local businesses helped to raise the money to make it a reality. Because typical, restaurant-style pagers encountered "dead spots" in the downtown area during a trial run, the plan required a stronger signal and a radio tower atop the old County Building which the group inspected on the roof. The change required approval from the Federal Communications Commission and the Canadian version of the FCC, Industry Canada. Rep. Levin’s office helped to secure the necessary approvals.
