Energy and Environment

I will fight to protect our environment, sustain our natural resources, and keep our communities safe for generations to come. Establishing more affordable, reliable and sustainable energy solutions will create new jobs and industry in the Hudson Valley.

Over the last few years, New York families have faced dramatically rising gas prices. I am committed to supporting efforts to promote energy independence in order to help lower the price at the pump.  A comprehensive energy plan must include both short-term and long-term energy solutions in order to reduce our reliance on foreign resources.  We can use a mix of traditional fossil fuel sources while expanding domestic resources and investing in innovative renewable technologies that will allow us to have more secure, affordable energy.

Maloney and Gibson Commend New Senate Legislation to Stop FERC’s Rate Hike

Representatives Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) and Chris Gibson (NY-19) commended the Senate introduction of their bill to prevent the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) from implementing the new Hudson Valley capacity zone. In July, the Maloney-Gibson legislation to prohibit funds from enforcing FERC’s new capacity zone overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives and is now before the Senate as part of the FY 2015 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill. Maloney and Gibson originally introduced legislation to prohibit the capacity zone in March 2014.

After Strong Push from Maloney, FERC to Hold Conference to Review Capacity Zone

Two days after Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) led a bipartisan letter calling on FERC to reverse its capacity zone decision, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced that it will now hold a conference with New York Public Service Commission to review the capacity zones on November 5. Since joining the Congress, Rep. Maloney has demanded that FERC reverse their reckless decisions, specifically citing their failure to take into account a number of initiatives underway that resolve capacity issues and ensure reliability like investments in transmission capacity and renewable energy like solar and wind energy or biomass plants like Taylor Biomass in Orange County.

Maloney Condemns Reckless FERC Decision to Refuse Rehearing

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) condemned the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s refusal to conduct a full rehearing regarding the new capacity zone created in the Hudson Valley. On June 3, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit will still consider a motion to stay further implementation of the new capacity zone.
