Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) today released the following statement applauding $1.1 billion in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance funding for Sandy repair work and mitigation projects at New York University’s (NYU) Medical Center. Maloney fought to secure the funding in a supplemental aid package approved by Congress in 2013.

“For those of us who saw firsthand the high flooding and destruction at NYU Langone and heard the stories of the brave medical staff who put patient care first, this announcement from FEMA of $1.1 billion for the medical center is wonderful news. This funding will pay for critical mitigation investments to ensure that this type destruction does not happen again.

“After Superstorm Sandy, Congress took action to help New York’s people, businesses, and essential services recover from the second biggest natural disaster our country has experienced in recent times. This FEMA funding is part of that commitment and demonstrates that our nation will be there when our cities or communities suffer catastrophic natural disasters.”

Background:

The $1.1 billion in federal aid includes $589 million for hazard mitigation work at the main campus and an offsite facility located at 600 First Ave. The remaining $540 million will be used for repair and restoration costs to address damages suffered by the medical facilities.
