On July 18, 2007, an 83 year old steam pipe exploded in the heart of midtown Manhattan. The explosion killed one woman, injured dozens of others and devastated area businesses. Maloney called on Governor Spitzer to ask the Small Business Administration to provide disaster relief. She also provided information about available assistance to local businesses trying to recover from the disaster. Maloney conducted a week long survey of area retail businesses to assess the impact of the disaster.

Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) joined with NYC Council Member Dan Garodnick and local business leaders to release the first large-scale survey of the devastating impact on retail businesses of last month’s steam pipe explosion in Midtown.  Maloney released her report outside the Pershing Square Restaurant, which was closed for six days and reported more than $150,000 in business losses as a result of the explosion.

Maloney (D- Manhattan, Queens) wrote to Con Edison CEO Kevin Burke to express her concerns regarding Con Edison’s failure to lift its 30-day deadline for businesses to file claims for reimbursement of losses resulting from last month’s steam pipe explosion in Midtown.  Maloney noted that many businesses in the “frozen zone” remain closed and others are still assessing their damages.
