WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY12), a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released the following statement today in response to a letter released by House Oversight Committee Republicans regarding New York’s request for a Medicaid waiver.

“Under Governor Cuomo, New York has made dramatic improvements to its Medicaid program, saving taxpayers billions of dollars and improving healthcare for millions of New Yorkers. These latest allegations from Chairman Issa about New York’s Medicaid program are outdated and, in many cases, wholly unrelated to New York’s pending Medicaid waiver amendment.

“As the Chairman’s report acknowledges and as the Chairman noted at a hearing last year, Governor Cuomo has taken positive steps to address many of the problems he inherited in New York’s Medicaid program. The reforms the state has implemented, along with the nation’s first spending cap, are projected to save federal taxpayers $17 billion over five years—a portion of which the state is asking to reinvest through this waiver.

“New York continues to fight waste, fraud, and abuse. The Medicaid Inspector General’s office last year made a record recovery of $851 million in health care fraud for a total of $1.73 billion over the last three years. These are historic accomplishments that should be rewarded by the Department of Health and Human Services to incentivize more states to adopt Governor Cuomo’s model in New York.”
