Maloney (D-NY) and Nita Lowey (D-NY) today urged Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael Leavitt to restore access to affordable birth control and other brand name prescription drugs for college and low-income women (full text of the letter below).  The Representatives’ concern stems from a provision of the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) that went into effect earlier this year and inadvertently caused the price of many brand name prescription drugs - including birth control - to increase at “safety-net” health providers such as campus health centers and community clinics.

Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) backed bipartisan legislation that will provide health care to 268,000 low-income children in New York and 10 million low-income children throughout the country.  The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization Act reflected a House-Senate compromise and passed the House last night by a vote of 265 to 159.

Washington, D.C. – Following Dr. John Agwunobi’s resignation on September 4th as Chair of the Bush Administration’s 9/11 Health Task Force, Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Vito Fossella (R-NY), Ed Towns (D-NY), Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ) today wrote to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael Leavitt and asked if he intends to name a replacement for Dr. Agwunobi in the near future.  In their letter (click here for a copy of the letter), the lawmakers also asked when HHS intends to release its plan to medically monitor and treat everyone exposed to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.
