WASHINGTON, DC—Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) issued this statement upon
President Obama’s announcement today to repeal the “global gag rule.”
“President Obama, in his first days, is well on his way to reversing 8 years of misguided policy,” Rep. Maloney said. “In repealing the global gag rule, President Obama has stopped the export of our divisive politics and renewed the export of our rights and values of free speech and expression. I proudly stand with him and will work within Congress to increase funding for family planning services abroad so that women’s lives may be treated with the respect they deserve-- and help achieve our overall foreign policy goals of increasing democracy abroad,” Maloney concluded.

Wade decision and the second day of the Obama administration, reproductive rights advocates have reason to celebrate,” she said.WASHINGTON, DC – “The Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act of 2008” (H.R. 5057), legislation that would extend an important federal DNA backlog processing program through FY 2014, passed the Senate today by unanimous consent. The bill is named for a rape survivor who testified before Congress about the use of DNA evidence. Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) introduced the bill, and House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-TX) are original co-sponsors.
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer and Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairman and Vice-Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) released statements in reaction to today’s troubling new data from the U.S. Census Bureau on household incomes, health care coverage, and poverty. While wages have risen slightly from 2006 to 2007 and fewer families are without health insurance coverage, over 30 million Americans are still living in poverty. More importantly, in the last seven years, the vast majority of Americans’ incomes are down, more families are going without health insurance, and millions more are living in poverty.
Washington, D.C. – Today, New York Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, Vito Fossella, Peter King, Charles Rangel, Eliot Engel, Edolphus Towns, and Anthony Weiner introduced an updated version of their bipartisan 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The new bill (H.R. 6594) will provide medical monitoring to those exposed to the toxic aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks, and treatment and compensation to those who are sick or injured as a result. Washington, DC – Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, Vito Fossella, and Peter King today announced that the proposed Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS) Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2009 will contain $108 million in federal funding to provide health care to first responders, local residents, area workers, students, and others who were exposed to environmental hazards released as a result of the 9/11 attacks.
