WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today voted to pass the Health Insurance Industry Fair Competition Act, H.R. 4626, which will repeal the anti-trust exemption for health insurance companies, requiring them to compete fairly and adhere to the same anti-trust laws as other companies.
“Today marks the 37th anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision that affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. Roe v. Wade provided women with the freedom to choose a safe medical option and allowed them to have control over their own bodies and reproductive lives. On this anniversary we must reaffirm our commitment to preserving women’s access to reproductive health care, including the legal right to an abortion.
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today offered the following statement upon the introduction of the “Affordable Health Care for America Act”:
WASHINGTON-- Rep. Carolyn Maloney offered remarks after the President Obama's speech to the Joint Session tonight:
"President Obama made an eloquent and specific case for health care reform tonight. He made it clear that he won't sign a bill that forces consumers to switch health care coverage and doctors they like-- or that adds to the deficit. His plan will require insurance companies to accept customers regardless of pre-existing conditions. And none of these reforms will put Medicare at risk; seniors will continue to obtain under that government-run program with a very high satisfaction rate. I believe the House will pass these reforms—including a 'public option'—and that we will have made a giant leap forward on what the late Senator Kennedy described as 'that great unfinished business of our society.' "
Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), along with Rep. Elijah Cummings and Rep. Jim Moran released a JEC new report entitled, “Comprehensive Health Insurance Reform: An Essential Prescription for Women.” The report reveals that during the recession, women are experiencing a double-whammy of lost health insurance as they lose their insurance due to either their own or their spouse’s job loss. In addition, the JEC report chronicles the vulnerability created by women’s dependence on their spouse’s employer-sponsored health insurance, the unique risk of un-insurance for younger and older women, and the spike in newly uninsured children of unemployed single mothers.
