WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney issued the following statement in honor of the 37th anniversary of the Supreme Court landmark decision, Roe v. Wade.

“Today marks the 37th anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision that affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. Roe v. Wade provided women with the freedom to choose a safe medical option and allowed them to have control over their own bodies and reproductive lives. On this anniversary we must reaffirm our commitment to preserving women’s access to reproductive health care, including the legal right to an abortion.

Madam Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to the Stupak/Pitts amendment which plainly discriminates against women, puts women’s health at risk, and marks an unprecedented restriction on people who pay for their own health insurance.
Nov 7, 2009 Press Release
Last Sunday, 42,000 people gathered in my hometown of  New York City to run the NYC marathon while 2 million more people watched, cheered, and marveled at those who accepted the challenge of running 26.2 miles.  It is likely that each participant had a different reason for running, but the ultimate goal was the same:  to finish, to succeed, and to accomplish a goal.  As Greek legend explains, the concept of the marathon comes from the long distance a messenger ran to deliver the important news that the battle had been won.  Madam Speaker, as we stand here today to debate a historical bill that will substantially improve the delivery of health care in America, we are the runners at mile 25.  The cheers are the loudest, the anticipation is the greatest, and the end, while near, seems very far away.  Despite all of the noise, the message is clear: now is the time for health care reform, now is the time to take care of all Americans, now is the time to make sure that families are not forced to see loved ones die because they did not get the care they need and deserve.

Sep 9, 2009 Press Release

WASHINGTON-- Rep. Carolyn Maloney offered remarks after the President Obama's speech to the Joint Session tonight:

"President Obama made an eloquent and specific case for health care reform tonight. He made it clear that he won't sign a bill that forces consumers to switch health care coverage and doctors they like-- or that adds to the deficit. His plan will require insurance companies to accept customers regardless of pre-existing conditions. And none of these reforms will put Medicare at risk; seniors will continue to obtain under that government-run program with a very high satisfaction rate. I believe the House will pass these reforms—including a 'public option'—and that we will have made a giant leap forward on what the late Senator Kennedy described as 'that great unfinished business of our society.' "

Aug 6, 2009 Press Release

Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), along with Rep. Elijah Cummings and Rep. Jim Moran released a JEC new report entitled, “Comprehensive Health Insurance Reform: An Essential Prescription for Women.” The report reveals that during the recession, women are experiencing a double-whammy of lost health insurance as they lose their insurance due to either their own or their spouse’s job loss. In addition, the JEC report chronicles the vulnerability created by women’s dependence on their spouse’s employer-sponsored health insurance, the unique risk of un-insurance for younger and older women, and the spike in newly uninsured children of unemployed single mothers.
