WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), along with Congresswoman Sue Kelly (R-NY), and Senator Dianne Feinstein in the Senate, introduced H.R. 1809, The Cancer Screening Coverage Act of 2001 (CASCA). CASCA applies to private health insurance plans (ERISA, group, and individual health plans) and to the Federal Employees Health Benefits plan, requiring these plans to cover cancer screenings.

WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Robert G. Torricelli (D-NJ) and Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) today introduced legislation to ensure that individuals at high risk for osteoporosis have access to screening tests for the disease. The Early Detection and Prevention of Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases Act of 2001 will require private insurance plans to cover bone mass (bone density) measurement testing for those at risk for developing the disease.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney hailed the passage today of a bill that included $935,000 for the NYU Program in Women's Cancer. The money was included in the final fiscal year 2001 appropriations bill for Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, which passed the House by a vote of 292-60.

NEW YORK - Today, at the East Side Animal Hospital, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) released a study revealing a whopping 150% price differential between prescriptions sold to humans on one hand and animals on another. At the press conference beleaguered New Yorkers - many of them seniors on Medicare - explained that they are unable to afford the skyrocketing prices for their prescription medications. Meanwhile, local veterinarians detailed just how inexpensive the same drugs are for cats and dogs.

New York - Today, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) released a study showing that seniors in Manhattan pay almost 2½ times as much for prescription drugs as members of large HMOs. New York seniors suffering from exorbitant drug costs joined Maloney and one explained that she pays as much as 1/3 of her annual income for medicines and is often forced to choose between food and prescriptions. One senior gentleman explained that he had cut his pills in half because he could not afford the fully prescribed dosage. Pharmacist Boris Mantell warned that cutting certain coated pills in half poses serious health hazards and should never be done unless advised by a doctor.

Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today, called for a Federal investigation to determine if there is a link between dry cleaning and breast cancer, after a new study by the Silent Spring Institute found that women who regularly use professional dry cleaning are also among those who develop breast cancer at higher rates than others.

New York -- Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that it had reached an unprecedented agreement with The Coulston Foundation (TCF), a New Mexico-based research laboratory, which will force TCF to give up 300 of the research chimpanzees under its care. The agreement settles an ongoing investigation by USDA into the deaths of several chimpanzees under Coulston's care.
