Paulsen Statement on August Unemployment Numbers

Millions sit on the sidelines as Administration policies such as Looming Medical Device Tax threaten more U.S. Jobs

Washington, D.C.– Rep. Erik Paulsen (MN-03), Acting Chairman of the House Ways and Means Human Resources Subcommittee, issued the followingstatement this morning regarding the latest unemployment report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment rose by 96,000, and the unemployment rate dipped to 8.1 percent.

“For the 43rd consecutive month unemployment remains above 8 percent as our national debt balloons to $16 trillion dollars and more than 20 million Americans still struggle to find work. And while our economy continues to see little growth, the administration continues to pursue economically destructive policies such as the looming 2.3% tax on U.S. medical innovation set to take effect January 1st. Just this week we saw a leader in innovative healthcare and one of Minnesota's most valuable employers, St. Jude, lay off 300 workers and cut back on much-needed research and development as a result of the looming $30 billion device tax.  Americans are past due for a new direction that delivers positive reforms to stop the tax hike, create jobs and spur economic growth."

Paulsen, a champion of small business and advocate of free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and innovation, currently serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and is co-chair of the Congressional Medical Technology Caucus.
