Paulsen Introduces Additional Legislation to Combat Sex Trafficking

Washington, D.C.– Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03), a leader in Congress on combating sex trafficking, joined House colleagues in introducing the Human Trafficking Prevention, Intervention, and Recovery Act to identify strategies that prevent children from becoming victims of the crime. The bill would instruct the Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking to develop best practices to deter youth from becoming victims of trafficking. The task force would also identify gaps in research that must be closed to create effective policies to prevent human trafficking.

“The lack of reliable research and established best practices make it difficult to combat human trafficking across the country,” said Paulsen. “Identifying effective strategies to proactively prevent children from becoming victims of sex trafficking will give us the best chance to protect these young girls.”

In addition, the bill would make shelters and facilities that house victims of trafficking eligible for Department of Justice grant programs.

Congressman Paulsen is a long-time advocate for combating sex trafficking and has testified in front of a Ways and Means Subcommittee about what can be done to address the issue. He also is the author of H.R. 3610, the Stop Exploitation Through Trafficking Act, which expands safe harbor laws and ensures that minors who are trafficked are treated as victims instead of criminals. That legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives in May.
