Nine Years Later, We Remember September 11

"On the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and the World Trade Center in New York City, we should all take a moment to reflect on lives of those we lost on September 11, 2001.

"Of the 2,819 people killed in those attacks, we should take particular note of the sacrifice made by a special group of 403 men and women. That is the number of first responders – firefighters, paramedics and police officers – who were killed on September 11 because, instead of thinking of themselves and their families, they thought of strangers and ran towards danger.

"How many lives were saved that day because the men and women at the site of the attacks – and the passengers on Flight 93 – didn’t run away? They sacrificed their lives so that others would be safe.

"That will be the legacy of September 11, 2001 and that is why we now recognize today as a day of national service and remembrance."
