Lawmakers pushed back on Friday on reports that the Obama administration plans to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.

Rep. Candice Miller (R-Mich.) said closing the base and transferring 150 suspected terrorists to the U.S. would be a “drastic, dangerous breach of authority” by the administration.

“There is no question that President Obama wants to close Guantanamo despite the overwhelming opposition of the American people and in defiance of the law passed by the people’s representatives,” Miller said. “He simply does not have the authority to make such perilous, consequential decisions without Congress, and he certainly should not continue down this path without allowing the American people to weigh in on decisions that jeopardize their security. As we continue to wage the war on terror in the Middle East, the President’s insistence on bringing terrorists into the U.S. is troubling and dangerous.”

Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) said it would be “a huge mistake” to close the detention facility as America battles ISIS overseas.

“Why is the White House even discussing this as we battle a brutal enemy that has beheaded two Americans,” Buchanan said. “Bringing dangerous terrorists into the U.S. makes no sense and sends the wrong message to our enemies and allies.”

The administration taking executive action to close the detention facility would override a congressional ban on transferring detainees to the United States.
