Congresswoman Beatty Joins in Marking the 60th Anniversary of

Brown V. Board of Education

Washington, DC – U.S. Congresswoman Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement today in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which was issued on May 17, 1954:

Sixty years ago the Supreme Court ruled on Brown v. Board of Education. The unanimous opinion written by Chief Justice Earl Warren held that, "Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal," and that segregation of schools violated Fourteenth and Fifth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. This decision signaled an end of state-sanctioned segregation of public schools in the United States, making it unlawful to deny access to public facilities on the basis of race.

Our remembrance and celebration today should not be limited to a single moment sixty years ago. While critical for our nation’s development, the Brown decision is a milestone in our broader struggle for equality. Generations of Americans prior to the 1954 decision fought, died, and strove for equality, and generations of American’s continue to push for equality since that pivotal day.

When the Brown decision opened the schoolhouse doors to Americans, regardless of race or color, it created an opportunity for millions of Americans. Sadly, the promise of the Brown decision remains unfulfilled in many ways. Millions of American families face trials and tribulations related to their color, creed, or religion. Even today, 60 years after legally sanctioned educational segregation ended, the legacy of this discrimination can be found in our schools, graduation rates, and university and work placements.

Today and every day we must rededicate ourselves to raise a new generation that may seize their opportunities. It is incumbent upon all Americans to deliver quality education to all that provides pathways to success. While we pause in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Brown decision, we should not rest on our laurels until equality for all is a reality in our great nation.
