Letter from Female Republican House Members Directing Obama
to Work with House and Senate on Immigration

 

WASHINGTON –Members of the Republican Women's Policy Committee (RWPC) sent a letter to President Obama today urging him to work with Congress and stay within his Constitutional constraints.

Text of the letter is below:

"Dear Mr. President,

The Republican Women’s Policy Committee is greatly concerned with recent media reports of your intention to bypass Congress and act unilaterally on immigration.  We urge you to work with members of the House and Senate on immigration and request that you work within your Constitutional constraints.

The members of the RWPC hold varying positions on immigration reform, but we all agree that you are not authorized to take unconstitutional action. The Constitution is clear: Congress writes the law and the President is tasked with enforcing the law. Your top-down approach to handling a crisis of this magnitude does nothing to unify the American people or create a dialogue with members in Congress. This is something you repeatedly vowed to do in your press conference following the midterm elections, even stating “And whether its immigration or climate change…[w]e can and we will make progress if we do it together.” Mr. President, we are asking you to work with us so that we can make these tough decisions together.

The citizens of this country have sent a message to Washington – they are tired of political games and ready for their elected officials to demonstrate real leadership. To be sure, reforming our immigration system is a complex issue. As such, it warrants an extensive and honest national conversation. Any reform must be a collaboration among the executive branch, Congress, and the people of this great country.

We are ready to have this conversation—and we hope you will abandon your go-it-alone strategy and join us."

Media has reported that President Obama plans to take executive action on immigration this evening. Despite repeated promises to work with members of Congress, he is bypassing the legislative branch, and overstepping his Constitutional authority to act on immigration.
