Congressman Holding Responds to Supreme Court Decision on DOMA

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today’s Supreme Court 5-4 ruling in the case of United v. Windsor struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was enacted into law in 1996. This law defined marriage as the legal union between a man and a woman on the federal level. The legislation allowed for states to recognize same-sex marriages, and also allowed them to refuse recognition of same-sex marriage from other states. Today’s Supreme Court decision overturned DOMA, and requires that federal law, including federal benefits programs, now recognize same-sex marriages issued by states that allow same-sex marriage.

Following the decision, Congressman George Holding released a statement:

“I believe in the sanctity of marriage and its role in our society. The institution of traditional marriage is a bedrock of our society and is essential to the best interest and preservation of American families. It is unfortunate that today the Supreme Court diverged from the traditional values upon which our country was founded.”
