Fiscal Responsibility
Representative Scott Peters Advocates for Fiscal Responsibility
Since coming to Congress, Scott has worked with colleagues to put aside partisan differences and craft a budget that cuts wasteful spending while investing in the future and preserving the safety net for both our seniors and the middle class.
I. Passing a Budget
Scott voted in favor of H.R., 3547, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2014, which provided the first budget in three years.
Scott voted in favor of H.R. 325, which adopts a version of ”No Budget, No Pay,” an initiative Peters declared his support for prior to being elected to Congress. It also raised the nation’s debt ceiling for three months, giving Congress more time to develop a more permanent solution.
Scott cosponsored:
- H.R. 3146, the SAVE II Act, which cuts down government spending by requiring by reducing duplication and increasing efficiency.
- H.R. 1869, the Biennial Budgeting & Enhanced Oversight Act of 2013, this bipartisan bill would require biennial (instead of annual) budget resolutions, biennial appropriations Acts, and biennial government strategic and performance plans.
II. Lowering our National Debt
Scott has taken action to protect America’s credit rating.
- Scott introduced H.R.3148, The Protect America’s Credit Act of 2013, which applies the debt limit only to debt held by the public and adjusts the debt limit for increases in the Gross Domestic Product.
- Scott introduced H.R. 3149, The Pay Down the Debt Act of 2013, which outlines a methodical budget plan to decrease the federal debt. Legislation will amend the outdated Congressional Budget Act of 1974 and will provide for a comprehensive debt stabilization process.
- Scott partnered with the Concord Coalition, to facilitate community members to work together in small groups to discuss policy alternatives to reduce projected deficits.
III. Cutting Wasteful Spending
Scott cosponsored:
- H.R. 2506, the Duplication Elimination Act of 2013, a bipartisan bill, which requires the President to create a proposed joint resolution based on the GAO report on duplication, consolidation, and elimination of duplicative government funding.
- H.R. 1999, the SAVE Act, which includes a series of measures to cut government waste, including reducing excess and underutilized federal property, ensuring strategic sourcing of goods and services by executive agencies, and avoiding duplicative information technology (IT) investment.
