(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement on the passage of a continuing resolution through December 11th, 2014 in the Senate.
“When Chairman Ryan and I reached a two-year budget agreement last year, it was especially important to both of us that we stop the cycle of governing by crisis. So, while I’m disappointed that we were unable to complete the regular appropriations process on time, I’m glad that with today’s vote, Republicans have again pushed the Tea Party aside and joined Democrats in ensuring workers and families don’t pay the price for unnecessary gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, D.C.
“There is no question, however, that we’ve got much more to do than simply avoid crises. With a budget deficit that has declined significantly as a share of the economy in recent years, we need to focus on the growing deficits we face in job-creating areas like education, innovation, and infrastructure, while also finding ways to tackle our long-term budget challenges fairly and responsibly.
“Addressing the harmful cuts from sequestration will be a critical part of this effort. The Bipartisan Budget Act showed that Republicans and Democrats are willing to come together to protect our economy and country from the consequences of these kinds of cuts, and I hope we will be able to work together again on this and other bipartisan priorities going forward.”
