House GOP Trying to Make Good on Mitt Romney’s 47 Percent Idea

Dec 20, 2012 Issues: Reconciliation, Sequester,

Washington, DC –  Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the House Republican reconciliation bill that will be on the floor today:

“Remember when Mitt Romney said we shouldn’t care about 47 percent of the American people? Well today House Republicans are once again trying to make good on that promise, protecting the very wealthy at the expense of working families and the most vulnerable in our society.

“The GOP is dusting off their budget reconciliation bill today to accompany their lopsided ‘Plan B’ – and we’ve already done the math on their approach. They want to reduce food and nutrition support for over 20 million kids; knock almost 300,000 kids off the school meals program; and kick at least 300,000 kids off the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“We need to stop the meat-ax cuts scheduled to start next year through the sequester – but Speaker Boehner walked away from talks with President Obama to do that in a balanced way. Instead, he’ll take partisan legislation to the floor today that will hurt American families and further push us toward the edge of the fiscal cliff.”
