NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The deadline is fast approaching for Ground Zero workers to register for theSept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund.

The last day to register is Oct. 14.

The fund  covers those already sick or anyone who fears they may become sick due to the toxic dust that lingered in the air over lower Manhattan following theSept. 11 terror attacks.

“We have to make sure that no one is left behind,” Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-Manhattan/Queens, told reporters Tuesday.

Even if World Trade  Center first responders and construction workers don’t feel sick now, they should register to preserve their right to file claims, said Mubarak Abdul-Jabbar of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

“Even though today you might not feel ill, tomorrow might be the day for you,” he said.

An estimated 3,000 workers have been diagnosed with 9/11-related cancers. More than 1,000 have been approved for compensation.
