Through out my time in Congress, I have been an advocate for national energy policies that increase energy independence, protect our environment, and use our natural resources responsibly.  Development of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures are critical to meeting those goals.  I will continue work with my colleagues on important initiatives including tax incentives for alternative energy, weatherization programs, and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

In the 111th Congress, I supported the Consolidated Land, Energy, and Aquatic Resources (CLEAR) Act (H.R. 3534) which would provide greater efficiency and accountability to the management and regulation of energy resources.  An amendment that would require a study to improve the measurement of oil and natural gas extracted from leased federal and Tribal lands was included in the CLEAR Act as passed the House in July 2010.  I will continue to support energy legislation that provides oversight to the management of our energy resources, mitigates future environmental risk, combats climate change, and creates clean energy jobs.

Madam Speaker,
I rise in strong support of HR 5481, granting Subpoena Power to the Commission Investigating the BP Oil Spill.  Last month, President Obama established the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling, a panel that will be vital to investigating the disaster and assuring this does not happen again.  However, this Commission does not have subpoena power, something critical to ensuring the full disclosure of evidence and witnesses.

Washington, D.C. – Last night, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) voted in favor of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Fill Suspension and Consumer Protection Act, which will halt purchases for America’s Petroleum Reserve until the end of the year and help bring down the price of gasoline.  The bill, which passed the House by a vote of 385 to 25, is expected to reduce gas prices by 5 to 24 cents a gallon.  After President Clinton suspended reserve purchases in 2000, the price of oil dropped by one-third – from $30 to $20 per barrel.
