Representing the 5th District of Illinois

Press Releases

Press Release
“At a time when entire neighborhoods in Chicago are being torn apart by gun violence, now more than ever we need to increase federal resources to go after gun traffickers and put more cops on the street. Requiring gun dealers to conduct annual inventories will help law enforcement combat the flow of illegal weapons to our city streets. Funding COPS grants will give cities the resources to hire the police officers they need to fight crime. I offered these amendments today because it’s time for Congress to take a stand against violent crime and give law enforcement the tools they need to keep our communities safe.”

“The government has a moral responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of any person under its charge. Right now, immigration detention standards are loosely enforced across different facilities, often leading to inhumane and prolonged detentions, especially among vulnerable populations. This legislation will develop and enforce consistent standards for the treatment of detainees and provide much needed oversight and transparency of our immigration detention system.”

“Over the next decade, the United States is set to spend hundreds of billions of dollars upgrading a nuclear weapons arsenal that matters less and less for our national security. Instead of directing our tax dollars to a nuclear weapon stockpile that no longer meets our security needs, we should make smart investments in our national defense that will meet our 21st century fiscal and strategic needs."
Press Release
“I was proud to join my colleagues on this bipartisan delegation to send a clear message that the United States stands with the Ukrainian people in their efforts to preserve a free and unified Ukraine. Considering Russia’s actions in Crimea and its continuing interference in eastern Ukraine, we must continue to apply pressure to Russia through economic sanctions and encourage the international community to support Ukraine at this critical time. After seeing the situation firsthand, it’s clear that diplomacy is working, and I strongly support Ukraine’s efforts to hold free and fair elections to let the people of Ukraine determine their future.”
