U.S. Representatives Quigley, Gutiérrez and Schakowsky sent FHFA Director Mel Watt a letter asking that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac not sell foreclosed properties in specific Chicago neighborhoods until a meeting is held to ensure continued access to affordable housing in those neighborhoods.

"Chicago's housing market is vital to the national housing market recovery and should be treated equitably in the federal loan limit process," said Rep. Quigley. "The flawed 'one-size-fits-all' loan limit formula puts Chicago behind similar major metropolitan markets and slows growth in our region. I hope the FHFA's new Director, Mel Watt, will closely examine this issue and use the agency's discretionary authority to raise Chicago's loan limit without delay."

The disparity long has stuck in the craw of the local residential real estate industry, which argues that the lower level for government-secured mortgages here dampens home sales in expensive neighborhoods and suburbs, forces buyers to take out multiple loans and has slowed the housing recovery.
