Rep. Ellison Statement on MSP Airport Strike

Dec 5, 2014
Press Release

MINNEAPOLIS—Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after joining airport workers protesting for higher wages and a union at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

“The workers protesting today deserve a wage that supports their families. The airport we use to visit our families can’t run without their hard work. In the heat of summer and the freezing cold of winter, these Minnesotans are there to make sure we get to where we’re going safely. I applaud the workers for their courage and the unions for fighting to help workers get a seat at the negotiating table.

“The firing of Delta baggage handler Kip Hedges for organizing to raise wages for airport workers is wrong. Working Americans shouldn’t be intimidated for joining together to demand better working conditions.

“Workers need to be able to support their families and organize to join a union. A wage increase isn’t going to guarantee every Minnesotan working fulltime can make ends meet, but it’s a start.”
