We’ve had a busy couple of months! We’re making progress on passing legislation to help establish a National Women’s History Museum on or near the National Mall. We’ve stood together for democracy in Ukraine, worked to secure reparations for Holocaust survivors and made the case for new technologies that can prevent gun violence. You may have also seen that the Today Show visited the home away from home I share with two other great Members of Congress, giving viewers an inside look at our daily lives!

New York Times backs National Women's History Museum bill
I’m leading a bipartisan effort with Representative Marsha Blackburn to build a National Women’s History Museum on or near the National Mall. In the past four months, we’ve made great progress, and I’m proud to say that the bill now has the support of leaders in both parties and will soon be brought to the floor of the House for a vote. Standing up for freedom and democracy in Ukraine
I have been proud to stand with Ukrainian Americans, many of whom live in the Congressional District I represent, as Ukraine’s new government and its courageous people continue pushing for freedom from Russia’s suffocating grip. I voted to provide $1 billion in loan guarantees to Ukraine and strongly support the Obama Administration’s efforts to sanction Russia. I recently held a rally on Roosevelt Island to protest the annexation of Crimea. NY1 has the story.
Working to secure reparations for Holocaust survivors
During World War II, French government-owned rail company SNCF was paid per head, per kilometer to provide the trains, cars, and manpower necessary to deport approximately 76,000 Jews and thousands of other “undesirables” from France toward Nazi death camps. Only 2,000 survived. Unfortunately, while reparations were available to French citizens and survivors who settled in four other countries, survivors and their families living in the U.S. were not covered by the agreements and never received reparations for this injustice. I’m working with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen to give survivors their day in court. Read about our efforts in Roll Call and the New York Daily News.
Preventing Gun Violence with Research and New Technology
Every year, about 100 children die from an accidental shooting, and in about 85% of those cases, the shooter was another child. Many thousands more, children and adults alike, have been killed by guns that are illegally trafficked or stolen. The technology to eliminate these senseless deaths already exists, and I believe it should be required. I recently joined Senator Edward Markey in an op-ed for USA Today on smart gun technology. We’re also working to secure federal funding for gun violence prevention research. I talked about the issue at a press conference with gun violence survivors. Check out the coverage from ABC7.
