Nolan Votes “Yes” to Approve Keystone Pipeline

Nov 14, 2014
Press Release

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan voted with the majority of Democrats and Republicans today as the House passed (252-161-1) legislation (H.R. 5682) to move forward with the Keystone XL pipeline project.

Preceding the final tally, Nolan voted against a closed rule barring consideration of any amendments to the measure.

The Senate is expected to consider a companion bill next week.

Following the vote, Nolan issued the following statement:

“I am disappointed that we were not permitted to amend the bill to require use of 100 per cent American steel in the construction. Nonetheless, this compromise legislation puts an end to almost seven years of gridlock, requires Keystone to comply with tough U.S. environmental protections, and allows for a route change in Nebraska that will avoid the environmentally sensitive Sandhills region.”

“Moreover, the Keystone project will provide America with access to additional oil reserves not subject to the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East while supporting more than 42,000 jobs across our nation, translating to $2 billion in earnings for workers, substantial local and state tax revenue, and an additional $3.4 billion to our gross domestic product.”

“The State Department and the government of Canada confirmed that these tar sands will be developed regardless of this project’s approval. These heavy crudes must be transported in the safest way possible, and it is important to note that pipelines – while not immune from accidents – have been shown to be a safer energy transportation method than truck and rail, producing a lower carbon footprint and preventing further rail and highway congestion.”
