FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 6th, 2012

Paulsen Statement on Asian Carp Legislation

Bipartisan Bill Will Help Protect Minnesota’s Waterways

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Erik Paulsen (MN-03) released the following statement after signing onto the bipartisan Upper Mississippi Conservation and River Protection Act (Upper Mississippi CARP Act), legislation that would help protect Minnesota’s waterways from the spread of Asian carp. The bill was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and in the House by Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN):

“The need to address the Asian carp menace grows every day as they continue to move upstream,” said Rep. Paulsen. “It’s imperative that we move this bipartisan bill forward so that we can ensure that our children and grandchildren can grow up enjoying Minnesota’s great natural resources.”

Rep. Paulsen is also cosponsor of the CARP Act, introduced by Representative Dave Camp (MI-04). The CARP Act would actively prevent and eradicate existing Asian carp in our waters. This legislation would enhance existing barriers and monitoring systems, as well as call for the immediate installation of interim barriers in rivers where barriers currently do not exist.

Paulsen, a champion of small business and advocate of free enterprise, entrepreneurship, and innovation currently serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, and is co-chair of the Congressional Medical Technology Caucus, as well as the U.S.–Korea Free Trade Working Group.
