Press Release
Presented by Region One GEAR UP and Community Development Corporation of Brownsville to educate parents and prospective students about college admissions and financial aid

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) announced two important financial literacy events taking place next week. The events, presented by Region One GEAR UP in partnership with the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville (CDCB), will premier the new novela Consejos, which informs parents and students about college entrance examinations, financial aid, and college admissions requirements. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to visit with representatives from banking and higher education institutions immediately following the movie premier to discuss opportunities and ask questions. Please see the attached flyers for more information on the events.

“I hope parents, students, and families take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn more about applying to college and the various forms of financial aid available,” said Congressman Vela. “Every student deserves the chance to go to college and the rising cost of higher education shouldn’t be a deterrent. I am pleased Region One and CDCB are making this a priority and providing the resources needed to make dreams a reality.”

Nick Mitchell-Bennett, Executive Director for CDCB, said, “Financial education is a necessary tool for independence. It affords a person options and potentially endless opportunities.”
