South Texas Students Encouraged to Apply to Prestigious Military Institutions                                                          

 

WASHINGTON –Today, Congressman Filemon Vela announced that his office is currently accepting applications from students in the 34th Congressional District who are interested in serving their country by attending one of the nation’s military service academies.  The deadline for seeking a nomination from Congressman Vela is Friday, October 11, 2013.

 

“I am honored to nominate South Texas students to represent the 34th District at our nation’s military academies.  These institutions help train the best and brightest of our nation as they prepare to lead United States military forces,” noted Congressman Vela.  “Attending one of the military academies provides young people with the opportunity to obtain a world-class education while serving their country."

 

High school graduates and graduating seniors may contact Congressman Vela’s office to apply for a nomination to one of the military service academies.  Applicants must be at least 17 years old but not past their 23rd birthday on July 1, 2014 and must also be U.S. citizens, unmarried and have no dependents. They must also demonstrate excellence in academics.  Application materials are available online at Vela.House.Gov.

 

Applicants must also establish an application file at the service academies to which they are seeking nominations.  Congressman Vela may nominate students for admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.  Congressional nominations are not required for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
