$3 Million Award for Construction of New Administration and Training Facility

WASHINGTON, DC - Tomorrow, Congressmen Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) will announce that Neighbors In Need Of Services, Inc. (NINOS) has been awarded approximately $3,000,000 in the form of a low-interest loan from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Program (USDA).

The funds will be used for the construction of a new administration and training facility expected to accommodate 340 occupants in Rio Hondo.  The administration facility will also serve as a space for staff training.  Additionally, an on-site kitchen be used to train culinary staff who will then provide healthy meals to Head Start students.

“This loan by USDA Rural Development will allow us to construct a community facility in Rio Hondo, which will serve as a centralized place for community education classes to be held,” said Manuela Rendon, executive director of Nino's Headstart.  “For example, the facility includes a kitchen where parents can receive training on how to prepare a healthy meal for their children.”

“USDA Rural Development is pleased to be a part of this funding opportunity,” said Paco Valentin, Rural Development State Director.  “The funding announced today will provide the needed assistance for NINOS to construct and operate an additional resource that will offer much needed outreach to the surrounding communities.”

“I am proud to represent an organization that prepares thousands of children in the Rio Grande Valley for future academic success,” said Rep. Vela.  “USDA Rural Development recognizes NINOS critical mission and the importance of facilitating their growth.”
