$820K Awarded to the Community Action Corporation of South Texas

WASHINGTON, DC Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) announced that the Community Action Corporation of South Texas in Alice, Texas has been awarded a $820,050 grant through the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).  The grant was funded under the Affordable Care Act and will support efforts to find and enroll eligible children in Medicaid and the Children¹s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

The grant, entitled Connecting Kids to Coverage Outreach and Enrollment, will support outreach strategies by engaging schools, bridging health coverage disparities, providing application assistance resources, and conducting training programs on the new enrollment system.

The lack of health insurance and access to affordable health care is a persistent problem for South Texans, with particularly adverse and long-lasting effects for our children.  With only three Agencies funded in Texas, we are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Connecting our Kids to Coverage Program,” Ann Awalt, Executive Director of Community Action Corporation of South Texas, stated. “Over the next two years, we will be working to educate and ensure that children in our eleven-county service area have health insurance through CHIP, Medicaid and other Programs through the Affordable Care Act.”

“Ensuring that all children have access to health care is a top priority of mine,” Representative Vela said. “I am pleased that HHS has awarded funds to the Community Action Corporation of South Texas to ensure that all children eligible for Medicaid and CHIP have the opportunity to enroll.”
