WASHINGTON, DC ­ Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) announces the designation of the Brownsville Historic Battlefield Trail as a national recreation trail.  The Brownsville Historic Battlefield Trail is one of 28 trails the U.S. Department of the Interior and the National Park Service designated this year, and the only one in the state of Texas.  National recreation designation recognizes existing trails and trail systems that link communities to recreational opportunities on public lands and in local parks across the nation.      

The nine-mile hike and bike path runs though the middle of Brownsville and ends north of the city at Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park.  Trail users experience the natural environment of South Texas, observing up close the beauty of the resacas, palm trees, mesquites, and wildlife.  This trail connects significant historic and cultural landmarks, provides healthy lifestyle benefits, and gives the community a convenient option to travel through the city via foot or bike.

“Over the last five months, I have worked with the National Park Service to bring recognition to South Texas’ trails.  Today’s designation not only preserves Brownsville’s historic past, but also encourages a healthy lifestyle.” Congressman Vela said.  

Today’s announcement comes in advance of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1.
