WASHINGTON, DC Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) attended a joint session of Congress where an address was delivered by President Park Geun-hye of South Korea.  President Park Geun-hye’s first trip abroad as South Korea’s President marks the 60th anniversary of the U.S.-South Korean alliance.  Her visit to Washington highlights the strong military and economic ties the U.S. shares with SouthKorea.

President Park Geun-hye, the first woman to be elected President of South Korea, met with President Barack Obama on Tuesday to discuss the two nations joint response to North Korea’s nuclear threats.  At the White House, the two leaders held a joint press conference with President Park Geun-hye stating she will by no means tolerate North Korea’s threats and provocations, which have recently been escalating further.”

While the situation in the Korean Peninsula remains tense, it is believed that North Korea recently removed two ballistic missiles from a launch site in the eastern part of the country.

During her address to Congress, President Geuen-hye said “she is president of a grateful nation” and with the support of the U.S., “no North Korean provocation can succeed.”

We will continue to stand firmly with our allies and I commend President Park Geun-hye for the strength she has demonstrated during her first few months in office, said Congressman Vela.  “The strength of this alliance has historically been tested by North Korea.  The alliance will remain resilient.”
