Sunday evening, Barber will speaker at the 16th annual Friendship Dinner of the Friends of Saguaro National Park. The event also marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Friends of Saguaro National Park, founded in 1996, is a non-profit that works in a public/private partnership with the National Park Service to support projects and programs that enrich the visitor experience at Saguaro, while conserving the park’s diverse natural and cultural resources.

On Monday evening, Barber will speak at the grand opening of the Paul and Lyndia Kalmanovitz Elder Care Center. The center is a collaboration of Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging and Tucson Medical Center.

The center, which will accept its first residents in January, will assist older adults who are experiencing behavioral health issues, such as depression, dementia, anxiety and rapid onset of impaired reality.

Saturday morning, Barber will be in Green Valley to attend the White Elephant Parade, which will feature 118 entries. The grand marshal for the parade is Pam Mox, retired publisher of the Green Valley News.

The parade benefits the White Elephant Shop, which raises money to donate to schools and charitable service organizations throughout Green Valley, Sahuarita and the Santa Cruz Valley. In 2013, the shop distributed $1.6 million to more than 120 schools and organizations.

After the parade, Barber will visit the Animal League of Green Valley’s no-kill shelter. Barber, a dog owner, will thank some of the volunteers who help operate the private, non-profit, all-volunteer shelter.

Sunday evening, Barber will attend an event at the University of Arizona featuring his predecessor, Gabrielle Giffords, and her husband, retired astronaut and Navy captain Mark Kelly.

UA Presents: An Evening with Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly,” features Giffords, who resigned from Congress to focus on her recovery after she was shot in the head, and Kelly discussing how they are transforming a personal tragedy into an endeavor to success.
