CASTRO APPLAUDS BIPARTISAN FIRST STEP TO EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE

Press Release
Castro Urges Immediate House Action to Help Texans looking for work
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joaquin Castro [TX-20] released the following statement applauding the Senate's vote to begin debate on a  bipartisan extension of unemployment insurance and calling on the House to take up the vote:

“Today the Senate took an important first step toward providing economic stability for the millions of Americans who have been dropped off unemployment insurance. Over 64,000 Texans lost their unemployment insurance in the middle of the holidays. As we mark the 50th anniversary on the War on Poverty this week, we are reminded that there is still work to be done.  We must offer some security to the folks who have worked hard, played by the rules, and continue to look for a job.

If Congress fails to act, almost 5,000 Texans will lose their unemployment insurance benefits every week over the next 6 months. House Republican leaders must also allow a vote for Congress can extend this vital relief so that all who are looking for a job may find one and all Americans can share in the growth of our economy.”
