CASTRO ON THE 4th ANNIVERSARY OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT & LOCAL ENROLLMENT EFFORTS

Mar 20, 2014
Press Release

San Antonio, TX – Congressman Joaquin Castro [TX-20] released the following statement highlighting the 4th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act and local efforts to help San Antonians get access to affordable, quality health care:

“The Affordable Care Act means access to quality, affordable health care coverage no matter your lot in life. The Affordable Care Act has benefited over 70 million Americans who already had insurance, but are now able to take advantage of preventive care services, like immunizations and mammograms, free of charge. Millions of seniors are saving on prescription drugs because they no longer fall in the donut hole of prescription coverage. Over 3 million young adults under the age of 26 have been able to stay on their parent’s health insurance providing some economic stability while they transition out of college and into their first jobs. Just this week, it was announced that 5 million Americans have signed up for health care through the Affordable Care marketplace.

In Texas, the issue of access to health insurance has been especially acute, since 1 in 4 Texans did not have health care coverage before the Affordable Care Act. Today, we are seeing a record number of folks sign up for health care. Nearly 300,000 Texans have already chosen a health plan that best suits their families’ needs and marking this anniversary reminds us of how important access to health care is for these families. In San Antonio, a coalition of local groups has already successfully enrolled more than 32,000 Bexar County residents.

There is still time to sign up for health care coverage before the March 31st deadline on healthcare.gov or in-person at events being held throughout San Antonio. I look forward to continuing to work with health care professionals, non-profits and public officials to ensure that all San Antonians have a chance to get access to the affordable, quality health care they deserve.”
