LOUISVILLE – Jeffersontown High School senior Cassandrea Grey is the winner of Congressman John Yarmuth’s 2014 Congressional Art Competition. Yarmuth made the announcement during an assembly at the school on Monday.

Grey’s watercolor portrait, “Jeff,” was chosen by a panel of judges from the local arts community. It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol’s “Artistic Discovery” corridor for one year, and Grey has been invited to Washington for an awards ceremony later this year.

“Art helps us better understand ourselves, our neighbors, and our communities,” Yarmuth said. “Louisville has a strong tradition in the arts, and I’m proud to take Cassandrea’s piece with me to represent our community in the halls of Congress.”

Since 1982, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have hosted the annual Congressional Art Competition, a contest that enables high-school students from across the nation to demonstrate their artistic talents before a global audience.

Yarmuth’s eighth annual competition drew a record 131 entries from high-school students representing 12 local schools. Students also entered the Community Choice Competition, in which residents of the 3^rd District chose a winner online. The winner of that competition will be announced at a future event.
