Where GAO Reports Come From
GAO's work is done almost entirely at the request of Congress, or is statutorily required by public laws or committee reports. GAO also undertakes research under the authority of the Comptroller General. Most GAO reports and testimonies are publicly available, unless they contain classified information.

GAO Makes Appointment to PCORI Governing Board
WASHINGTON, DC (September 30, 2014) — Gene L. Dodaro, Comptroller General of the United States and head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), today announced the appointment of Barbara J. McNeil, MD, PhD, the Ridley Watts Professor and founding head of the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, to the Governing Board of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
“It is a pleasure to name Dr. McNeil to the PCORI Governing Board,” Dodaro said. “She offers impressive credentials and extensive experience in health services research and improving the quality of health care.”
Dr. McNeil will fill an opening on the Board for the 2014 appointment cycle. A brief biography of Dr. McNeil follows:
In addition to being Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, Dr. McNeil is a professor in the Department of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Her research has focused on technology assessment and quality of care. She has done work in these areas in both the private and public sectors, including in the Veterans Health Administration. Recent publications and research have addressed racial disparities in cancer care, the effect of tumor boards on the quality of cancer care, and area-level variations in cancer care outcomes. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and has served as chair of its Board on Health Care Services. She is currently vice chair of the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board of the National Academy of Sciences. She previously served as a member of the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission (a precursor to MedPAC) and on the Publications Committee of the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. McNeil received her MD from Harvard Medical School and her PhD from Harvard University.
