Congressman Yarmuth Announces Recovery Act Investments at Valley High

On May 27, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03) joined Valley Traditional High School students, Mayor Greg Fischer, and JCPS Superintendent Sheldon Berman to announce a $26 million Recovery Act investment for construction and renovation at the historical high school.

“This isn’t just a huge day for Valley High School – it’s a huge day for all of southwest Jefferson County,” said Congressman Yarmuth. “I am thrilled that funding from the Recovery Act is being invested in revamping and renewing this historic school, giving Valley students more resources and more opportunities to build strong, successful futures.”

The project - scheduled for completion in the 2012-2013 school year - is funded through interest free bonds supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which Yarmuth strongly supported in Congress. The existing school building will undergo several renovations that include the HVAC system, fire alarm, security, windows, science labs, structural repairs, floors, ceilings, lights, and painting. The project includes a 625-seat auditorium and a 3,200-seat gymnasium. Some of the renovated classroom space will house courses for the Medicine, Health, and the Environment Career Theme. Two classrooms will be converted into life-like hospital rooms where students, under the guidance of real medical professionals, will engage in hands-on learning in the medical field.

“This project creates unique learning opportunities for Valley students,” said Superintendent Berman. “It will also provide a showpiece for the district that will potentially benefit students from all schools. We thank Congressman Yarmuth and the many others who helped make this dream a reality for the southwest Jefferson County.”
