WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today congratulating the leaders of the Congressional Black Caucus for the 114th Congress, including Rep. G. K. Butterfield, Rep. Yvette Clarke, Rep. Andre Carson, Rep. Karen Bass, and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries:

“Rep. G. K. Butterfield is an outstanding choice to serve as the next Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.  He has been a staunch advocate for equal rights and has worked to promote jobs and opportunity for all Americans.  I join in offering him my congratulations, along with the rest of the CBC leadership team for the 114th Congress, which includes 1st Vice Chair Yvette Clarke, 2nd Vice Chair Andre Carson, Secretary Karen Bass, and Whip Hakeem Jeffries.

“The CBC has long been the conscience of Congress and of the Democratic Caucus, and it continues to look to the future by fighting for equality, opportunity, and justice for all.  I look forward to working closely with Chairman Butterfield and CBC Members to advance this important work with vigor and determination as we head into 2015, when we will mark the fiftieth anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the Voting Rights Act, and President Johnson’s Great Society.”
