The truly shocking events surrounding the attack on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, her staff, a federal judge and other bystanders last Saturday have led some to reconsider the types of security measures that should be put in place for members of Congress — and what effect political speech has on the public debate. Despite the horrific and heinous act of violence, it remains my belief that we as members of Congress should not drastically change the way we interact with our constituents.
