WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin, along with U.S. Representative John Delaney (all D-Md.), announced Wednesday that the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Company will receive $64,695 in federal funding to go towards purchasing life-saving firefighting equipment.

The award comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The Smithsburg company will use the grant funding to replace outdated Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, which allow firefighters to breathe in smoke-filled rooms.

Senator Cardin described the equipment Smithsburg is getting as "vital," and Congressman Delaney said he wants the company to have the resources it needs to "save lives in Smithsburg for the next 80 years."
