Meehan: Benghazi Select Committee "A Chance to Finally Get the Truth"

May 2, 2014
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC– Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today issued the following statement after the announcement that the House of Representatives will vote to establish a select committee to investigate the attack on the American diplomatic facility in Benghazi in 2012 and the Obama Administration’s subsequent response:

“It’s been more than a year and a half since a terrorist attack on an American diplomatic facility that cost the lives of our ambassador and three other American personnel, and the Obama Administration still refuses to come clean about its actions in the hours and days after the attacks,” said Congressman Meehan. “E-mails released this week prove that senior White House political appointees were instrumental in crafting a narrative for the American people that our own intelligence agencies knew to be false – and they did it in the heat of a presidential campaign.

“The select committee announced by the Speaker today will have the ability to subpoena witnesses and documents, hold public hearings, and interview administration officials. It’s a chance to finally get the truth about what happened that night, and why the story the Administration sold to the American people ended up being so far from the truth.”

Meehan, a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, is a co-sponsor of H.Res. 36, which establishes a select committee to investigate and report on the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi.
