Brian Zimmerman -- Fellow

Growing up Brian Zimmerman knew that he wanted to work in law enforcement but, when studying for a degree in Criminal Justice, he decided the military would be a good stepping stone before moving into that field.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in December 2005.

As an infantryman he was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, from April through November 2007 with the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Battalion, and 6th Marines.

Following his discharge from the Marines, Zimmerman earned two bachelor degrees and completed an internship with a small company assisting disabled veterans with various needs.

He learned about the Wounded Warrior Program through the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association website, applied for the position with Congressman Mike Michaud of Maine, and was hired in August 2013.

He admits to experiencing frustration when he cannot help a veteran who does not qualify for certain benefits but says those moments are outnumbered by the many successful cases he has resolved.

“This program has given me the connections and opportunities I will need to stay involved with veterans’ issues and continue to make a difference,” he said.
