NEW YORK – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) today released the following statement after a meeting of the New York congressional delegation with MTA Chairman/CEO Tom Prendergast. “The outcome of this meeting was clear: the New York delegation strongly believes that the MTA and labor must return to the bargaining table to resolve the present impasse. With no realistic prospect for congressional action, both parties must work around the clock to secure a final deal that can avoid a strike. Mr. Prendergast says the parties are close to a deal. I hope that’s true, because the clock is ticking. “A strike would be devastating for the residents of not just Long Island, but the economy of New York City as well. As the Representative for one of New York’s strongest business districts, I’m concerned that people wouldn’t be able to get to work, other forms of transportation into the city would become stressed, and the employers I represent would be severely impacted. Our hotels should be filled with tourists visiting the world’s greatest city - not commuters.”

NEW YORK – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney today released the following statement regarding the murder of z"l Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrah: “Today we all join Israelis in mourning the deaths of Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrah. Their deaths are a terrible reminder of the savage cruelty of terrorism. While we all hoped and prayed for their safe return, their deaths underscore the urgency with which we long for peace. Once again parents will return home without their sons; once again hope is replaced with sorrow; and once again a nation must mourn the senseless deaths of young men cut down too soon. I condemn the actions of the murderers in the strongest possible terms, and I am appalled by those who have celebrated their kidnapping and death.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Sebelius. “The Supreme Court just put employers in between a woman and her doctor. The conservative members of the Court have declared that employers at closely held corporations may impose their own religious views on the health care choices of employees and restrict a person’s medical insurance coverage so that it doesn’t offend the boss’s personal beliefs. To that message they attached an annual bill for $269—the average increase in out-of-pocket costs for contraception that millions of women may face as a result of this deeply flawed decision."

The move achieves most of the goals contained within the Congresswoman’s Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act (H.R 1751), which she has been working to pass since 2003. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced companion legislation in the Senate. The FMLA allows qualified workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for newborns, seek emergency medical care for himself/herself, parents, children under 18, or a legal spouse. WASHINGTON –Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement in opposition to changes to the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) program contained within the TRIA Reform Act bill considered today by the House Financial Services Committee. “While the TRIA Reform Act is a significant improvement over previous drafts, I still have strong concerns with the bill. Specifically, I oppose the provision that would increase the trigger for the government backstop from $100 million to $500 million. I also oppose treating ‘conventional’ terrorist attacks differently from so-called “NBCR attacks” — nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological attacks."
