Job Summary:  The position is for a Veterans Affairs constituent services representative in Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva’s Tucson district office.  Primary responsibilities are to facilitate and coordinate responses to a wide range of requests received from military and veteran constituents and liaison between the Congressman’s office and the various veterans’ organizations in the district and state.  District constituent services representatives help constituents, interact with administrative and government agencies by acting as facilitators, ombudsmen and, in some cases, advocates.  The individual holding this position is also responsible for keeping the Congressman current on issues of concern and systemic problems that may require his involvement to correct the situation

Job Duties and Responsibilities: Acts as the representative for Congressman Grijalva and Veterans, responsibilities include answering casework correspondence, meeting with constituents, verbal communications with constituents, and serving as a liaison with federal, district, and local agencies; informs Constituent Services Director of all happenings in Veterans issue area by screening district media sources and interacting with constituents;

Handles casework assignments; acts as a liaison to local, state and federal officials and other persons or groups to form effective relationships for Congressman Grijalva and his staff; assesses Veteran casework for problems requiring legislative action and makes recommendations to the Constituent Services Director and Legislative Director; Screens and refers cases, when appropriate, to other district offices; logs in all incoming and outgoing mail and incoming telephone calls relating to casework; prepares monthly reports for Constituent Services Director on pending cases and district activities in Veterans issue area; continually screens active cases and acts as liaison with constituents to ensure that their cases are handled in a timely manner; maintains up-to-date files on all cases and categories of information of importance to the office.

Performs in the capacity of Veterans Field Representative, the individual will represent the Congressman at meetings and functions hosted by local Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) to gather information on items of interest to constituents; provides updates on the activities of Congressman Grijalva’s on topics of importance to VSOs, and reports on recommendations and or concerns raised at the various meetings for review by Congressman Grijalva.

Required to learn the laws, regulations and intricacies affecting a constituent’s case as well as the procedures and structure of Congressman Grijalva’s office regarding casework and employee obligations, as outlined in the Office Handbook and the House of Representatives' Ethics Manual.

Requirements:  This program is limited to veterans who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001, with less than 20 years of service and have a minimum 30% disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  High school degree required, some college courses preferred but not required.  Professional education through the U.S. military is highly encouraged.  Excellent communication and organizational skills.  Recent experience and understanding of the U.S. Military and Department of Veterans’ Affairs structure, procedures, and policies.  Service-oriented, positive attitude, and strong teamwork ability.”
